Forsythia and ninebark/Physocarpus are both deciduous but densely twiggy enough to provide privacy year round. Panicled hydrangeas/Hydrangea paniculata such as Limelight, Firelight, or Quickfire all get to be 8’-10’ tall and wide, and are long blooming. If you leave the dried bloom heads on for the winter it will make a reasonable winter screen that isn’t as dense as the previous two I listed. All of these come in various sizes depending on cultivar, so be sure to check size at maturity. All prefer quite a bit of sun and are happiest without too much moisture after they are established, so don’t plant these if it is wet all season.

You can also check out some of the bigger evergreen Rhododendrons if it isn’t too wet. They are also varying in size, depending on species and cultivar, so read tags and look up on reliable websites such as botanic gardens to get as realistic as possible estimate of size.

Are deer likely to be an issue? If not, look at some of the semi-dwarf arborvitae/Thuja occidentalis. I have a couple, ‘Sungold’ and ‘Techny’ that shouldn’t get over 15’ or so.

All but the rhododendrons grow fairly quickly in my experience.

I second the limelight hydrangea. I came across some mature ones at a nursery this summer that they had limbed up a bit....they were absolutely stunning!!

All the suggestions make sense -- rhoddies, viburnums and hydrangea. Why not plant one of all three? And you are in your seventh decade. Not your seventieth! LOL You've got plenty of life left my friend. You'll be able to see those three shrubs bloom and enjoy them!

Viburnum trilobum is nice. Something suckering like gray dogwood or serviceberry will have better weed suppression. Eastern red cedar is reliable as well, have seen some very wide bushy varieties absolutely covered in bright blue berries. I don't know if it was a particular cultivar or just chance but very nice.
