my first Yuzu taste

My first yuzu, which set this summer (quick). My nephew and I tried it and we like it. I was worried about some of the bad taste review I had heard. It was a very mild lemon taste, less sharp than store lemons, a vague hint or orange, the peel and white was very edible. Nothing vinegary or off putting as I had heard at all. Not a lot of juice but not dry either, good when you need a small lemon. Seedy (but the seeds are already peeled and in paper towels on top of my boiler in plastic bag) but thats OK. We pulled out seeds and ate it straight up, my nephew really enjoyed. I rarely eat whole lemons but will suck on a piece now and then, this was better. Pleasantly surprised.

Thanks for the review. I may consider getting a plant now. I don't know why but I did not think the juice would taste good. But of course, yuzu is used in ponzu soy sauce and I love that in my poke bowl.

I expect that different people experience the 5 senses differently, including taste. Nothing off putting about yuzu

We use Yuzu sauce from a local Japanese store in our cooking and as salad dressing. I love the flavor.

Ponzu sauce: that is the name I was trying to remember. I should look for it. Our local Asian store sells a yuzu sauce with hot peppers. That is the only one I have tried and it is great.

Now that was the first fruit produced by that tree, so it may have been on the bland side and future fruit may develop more robust funkiness, I don't know. But in my book its good for cooking/dressing and even beats eating a store lemon. This tree is young and on dragon, but they are supposedly cold hardy (I bring in/out in container so wouldn't know). Definitely worth fooling around with if interested in producing a cold hardy hybrid.

I wanted to taste yuzu, so I bought a jar of Korean marmalade tea. The "citron" flavor is made with yuzu and it's delicious. It's now a regular item in my fridge. You could make your own.

I love yuzu so much I brought two trees up from Florida to New York. I have never considered they might be hardy here, and bring them inside to overwinter in time for them to acclimate to the dry heat. I have had very variable yields, which I have attributed to fertilizing (I use citrus fertilizer) and pollination. I would appreciate learning from anyone the proper timing and method of pruning so as not to interfere with flowering. As for pollination, I may try hand pollinating next year.

Brooklyn, I'm glad to hear you like it. I harvested five recently have have used two for an Asian inspired noodle meal. They are good. Bob - impressive!! Enjoy your harvest!
