Building a Home Remodeling Design Dilemma

Door swing overlap - help!

We're in the midst of a master bedroom and ensuite renovation, and are wondering if it would be annoying/awkward/wrong if the bedroom door swing were to stick slightly past the stub wall behind it?

The door swings onto a stub wall that's the side of the access/opening to the closet and ensuite. The opening was originally planned to be 30" wide (8' ceilings), however it feels a bit tight since this will likely be a high traffic area. We could shorten the stub wall by ~6" (effectively increasing the size of the opening), however then when the door is open, it sticks past the stub wall. We're wondering if this is some sort of design faux pas that wouldn't look right, or if it would be annoying as the door could be bumped into.

We used the double door solution for the door from our MBR to the bath. The only catch is that you now need the right amount of space behind each door panel so they open to 90 degrees. In our case we used shorter door stops and trimmed the casing on door frame so the doors would swing back farther toward the wall.

You could make the bedroom door a center-parting 2-panel door (think bi-fold door panels). Then it would only stick into the room by 15" on both sides.

Move the door forward in that hallway and put a bi-fold on the hallway closet door so you don't accidentally run into it if you were in a hurry to get out of the master.

@chispa We would love to bring the door further into the hallway, however there is a cold air return and attic access preventing us from doing so (we actually already move the door as far as we could). Great idea about the bi-fold door on the hallway closet!

@Bruce in Northern Virginia Does your door also stick past the stub wall, or does it end flush with the opening?

How are the installers going to get the tub and vanity into the bathroom? The corners are tight and the bathroom door is narrow.

@bpath The partition wall between the closet and ensuite will be open during construction. The vanity will also be constructed in pieces and will be narrow enough to fix through the doorway once finished. The tub might be a tighter squeeze, definitely worth considering, thanks for the heads up!

Does that make your vanity and plumbing on the exterior wall?

@millworkman Yes the vanity and the toilet will be on an exterior wall, however the plumbing is inset slightly so it's not 'in' the exterior wall.
