protecting tulip bulbs

So my tulips usually get eaten by squirrels really badly, and they also tend to rot because the ground is so wet (MA zone 6a, dense wet clay). So I dug them all up have been safely storing them in the basement and they look great. But I am trying to decide how to replant to avoid those issues. I was thinking of putting groups of like 10/15 bulbs in those cheap black planters, sink it into the ground, fill it with good soil, and perhaps vermiculite and put chicken wire over the top of the planter at ground level so the squirrels can't get it.
Had anyone tried this and how did it turn out?
