how to remove stains from old table?

We bought a used table that has some stains on the top. It looks like they aren't sitting on top of the finish, it looks they've soaked in so to speak. Is there any way to try to clean and remove them? Or do I need to take the finish off by sanding or using chemicals to remove the stain, then refinish it? What refinish would I even use?
Edit: trying to attach photos but it isn't working

I've been trying.. but after selecting a picture nothing happens...

It would be good to get pictures. Proper suggestions could have been given then. However, you can apply non-gel toothpaste on a cloth and rub it on the stain.

Or you can make homemade paste with water and baking soda. Use petroleum jelly is another option to clean the stain you said.

I'll try uploading pictures from my laptop instead of my phone and see if that works
