You could use the rug in just the couch area and have the desk and chair completely off it

How large of a couch do you think you'll be putting there? Loveseat, maybe? The rug looks kinda small to me, but you could layer it over a larger one underneath.

Yes, if you want the rug to be under the chair AND under the front legs of the couch, you need a larger rug. Do you have the couch yet? How big is it? Tape out the location on the floor. Measure the length (from the desk to the opposite wall) and the width, from under the legs of the couch to beyond the desk area (is something going across from the couch?). I suspect you will need at least an 8 x 10 rug, if not a 9 x 12 rug for this expanse. Note: you might want to get a plastic mat for beneath the desk chair so that it can roll freely, and you can protect the rug from wear.

I would place the rug in the sofa area only.

-dimensions of the room

-photos of all 4 walls.

-size of new sofa

Do you have a plan for all of those wires?

Thanks everyone! Yes, we are at the very beginning stages - the wires will be organized at some point. We don't have the couch yet - we are looking at couches/loveseats around 70 inches long. The room is roughly 11' 8"x 11' 10". Additional photos of the room are below.

1) Is the 11' 8"x 11' 10" the area without the entryway? I would need the measurements without the entryway, as that is not usable space.

2) Why do you want a sofa? Would chairs work for you?

Yes, without the entry way. And we are hoping to have an option to use it for guests as well at some point, which is why we are looking at smaller sleeper sofas.

Here is how I'd set up the room 8 x 10 rug. There is less room than you think when accounting for the closet door to open.
