Odd isn't a capital crime, but remember AVs sport easily...darn easily. Oh, btw Rosie (off-topic), my AVs have responded to the warm winter (till this week) by doing budding that I would not have expected till March. It's now white and 20F though :(

I agree she is beautiful but not even close to what she should bloom but that's ok. I love that darker center, and her leaves are very dark as you can see in the pix. Maybe the next bloom cycle will be accurate??? Wishful thinking??? Rosie

Maybe, but she seems a bit too different to me to bloom true, but I've never had a fantasy violet before. It's also interesting with the pictures online that half of the seem to be red backed and the other half green backed. I like the red backing like yours more. I think it suits how dark the leaves are :)

My fantasies have tended to revert within a year to solid colors.

I would be patient to see what she does when she finally grows up. One of the colors is there. OTOH this is a chimera, isn't it? They don't always come true from a leaf IIRC, only from offshoots. This one is also supposed by one vendor to change all by itself into different color patterns on the same plant.

I would definitely hold on to this one if I were you and let it grow out just to see what happens.

What there is now is gorgeous. If you have a stable daughter of a chimera, wouldn't you actually have a new variety all to your self? You could easily then name it something like After Thought...

Old Dutch, this is not a a chimera to my knowledge. My leaf came from a member of my AV group and I can't believe she would have bagged a chimera leaf.

I found this pix and the following description on EBAY------

African Violet Mind Games (LLG) plant

Ok,,,,,,So as far as I am concerned,,,,,,All I wanted to do was plant the leaf I got and get a beautiful plant. Well it is a beautiful plant but how can it turn into a CHIMERA if it didn't start out that way in the first place????? Ok I understand "sporting",,,,,does the above explanation mean I may now have a sport? No way is it a chimera the way the blossom is colored, right?

Not a chimera, I think I misused the term above. Chimera and fantasy have different patterns. It is supposed to be a fantasy, isn't it? Fantasies are not only highly variable, they often do not come true from leaf either. I have read that both types will come true from flower stem cuttings or from offshoots... Flower stem cuttings sounds real tricky to me.

One other thing: first bloom is not always what the mature plant will show once it is grown out. Too soon to judge this one yet IMO. What it is showing now is gorgeous, and if it never changes I would say it is still worth keeping.

Older fantasies are more stable. When only one color such as blue specks on pink.

Playful Spectrum, a newer one, is the least stable fantasy.

Speaking of fantasy,,,,,,waaaaayyyyy back in the day there was a cute little violet called Inky Pink. I can't remember who hybridized it and google will not bring it up. Anyway,,,,,,I had it, it was one of my favorites and I propagated the living heck out of it. I just loved that plant. The point is,,,,every first flower that bloomed always was true. Back then I never had any propagated leaf 'sport' or do anything crazy. I just loved that little Inky Pink!!!! Sure wish I had one now but I think it went the way of Violet Heaven with all the rest of the oldtimers we wish we still had.

I prefer your double pink to the original pink/purple fantasy. Double pink AVs always bloom so beautifully. :)

I totally love that Smokey Mountain! Optimara AVs haven’t been sold here in ages, but eons ago they had pop up booths in the malls.

btw, I’ve grown hundreds of AVs from leaves and never had a sport until I grew Clowning Around from Lyndon Lyons. It’s a fantasy. :p

Oh yeah,,,,,I have Opt. Smokey Mountain and Opt. Rocky Mountain. They are both gorgeous! We don't have booths that sell any violets/plants. Lowe's and Meijer sell the Optimara's here. Rosie

And you can often get full size plants of those varieties through Selective Gardener. They cost a bit, but they come in 4 inch pots and are usually blooming. :))

The criteria are - you love it and it is a good grower - keep it. There is only so much space to waste it on dawgs..
