Awkward wall in kitchen/dining

I’m struggling with the long empty wall next to my fireplace. There was previously a wall separating the dining (formerly family room) and the kitchen, and now it just looks awkward. This whole room has always looked “off” to me. Maybe it’s the scale/placement of the furniture along with the empty wall. Any ideas for this space would be greatly appreciated!

I would also recommend going for some accent wall. In this way, it will look beautiful and look gorgeous without doing much in your room!

Will also recommend changing chair covers with some bright color. Lastly, you need more light in your room!

I moved this bench to the fireplace wall to see what it would look like but it feels a little cramped.

    The artwork is marvelous tho!

Thanks! They definitely add some much needed color to the neutral room.

Where is your family room now? And agreed no to the bench

Do you need furniture there? Large art would be fine.

Would a shallow console table work there?

HU-1875...it’s at the front of the house where the formal living room/dining room combo was. Now we use that space as a large living room.

I’m not against a console table but wasn’t sure what I would put on it since I already have the skirted table with lamps.

Gotcha. To me this space doesn’t need much on the wall. It has paneling it looks good. The concern I have is this space is really screaming for a sectional couch. The FP just calls for it. That’s the reason I asked about the layout. The only other thing I’d consider is removing that skirted table from the back and making a built in bench with a bigger lighter table. Then we’ll use those two beautiful matching chairs with slip covers rather than so many different ones. What do you think of that idea? Does it talk to you in any way?

I did move our sectional in this room a while back to try it out but I really like having the family room at the front of the house because of the front yard view. I like the idea of a larger and lighter table... actually all new dining furniture. Are you saying you would put the built-in where the skirted table is, or along the window? The other strange thing about this space is the windows aren’t centered on the fireplace, which makes table placement kind of tricky.

Right. This is a tricky room. I would do the built in bench on the window wall. But also remove that skirted table. I hear you re the family room. And I know this is off the kitchen so dining makes the most sense for your family. Just in this current space. It is screaming family room. Nothing a little touching up can’t change

Thanks for your help! I love the idea of a built in bench along the window. Would you place anything on the wall where the skirted table is, or just leave it empty. Gotta love old houses and the tricky things to work around :)

Start without anything on that wall. I don’t think it’ll need anything. We can always add art if needed. Lol I love preserving old homes. There’s just something warm and cozy about every single one of them. There’s nothing like it
