Bathroom wall tile design

last modified: 5 years ago

Hi everyone, I am remodeling a shower stall and noticed that accent bands are not often used with carrara marble tiles. Why's that? Is it because marble is already quite "busy" and a mosaic band will make it worse? Anyway, I'm thinking between the two and open to feedback. Photos in the next line.

Marble is beautiful. A lot of tile is not. Your choices don't marry well together. - The marble is timeless, classic and upscale. Your tile is rustic. They do not go together at all. Accent strips are also dated. If you want some kind of accent, use a marble mosaic accent, not a tile one. Put it in a shampoo niche - I would not do any stripe. - If wanting the small square design, use that size/shape on your shower floor in the same carrara you selected for the walls. You can also use a basketweave, mini brick, hexagon (in carrara) - all these shapes will work on your shower floor and a niche if you want one.

You at least need to start with tiles that complement one another and don't fight for dominance. Stripes are not as popular in up scale bathrooms.

Design is EDITING. No and big fat NO to all your current accent selections. It doesn't meed an "accent" Towels are a great accent : ) Especially when you are attempting to mix warm and cool toned tile. No....no..........and no.

And the mosaic as accent in a band idea? That has rather "sailed" via an overdone fad to begin: )

IMO less is always more ans d especailly in batrhooms. Those do nort work together and please do not do a shower niche is some other tile either . In fact I would not do a niche at all keep it simple you will love it much longer and I have no idea why anyone wants to highlight shampoo bottles. get a nice over the door or wall shower caddy. I like the accent band if the tile in the rest of the bathroom is a plain 12 x24 tile on the floor and shower walls but not with marble. I aslo do mot like the cement tiles with the marble.

Patricia is always telling people not to do niches but to instead put those disgusting caddies that always seem to be scummy. I have had wall niches and find they are much easier to keep clean and look better. And if you don't want the shower bottles to be seen, do as I did in my upstairs bath, put the niche on a wall where it's not seen from outside the shower.

I agree - Patricia is always telling people to get those shower caddy's. Are we still in college? If you don't like niches, you can also do marble corner shelves. As far as seeing shampoo bottles, there are many places (Etsy) where you can get pretty decorative bottles to transfer you products into.

Thanks all for your comments. I have decided to do away with the mosaic bands, so we can all breathe a collective sigh of relief! @cpartist, do you mean to put the niche on the side which is out of the line of sight from outside? I think that's a good idea!

@Dan C - You're making the right decision. Just the carrara tile on the shower walls will be beautiful on its own. Pick a small mosaic carrara for the shower floor tile. So many shapes are available. Hexagon, mini bricks, small squares, basketweave. Just make sure it matches with the wall tile. It's going to be gorgeous.

@Design Girl I was planning to use some of these hexagon pieces for the niche, but I can get more for the floor too. I have to admit though that I initially didn't think of using them for the floor due to more grout lines (cleaning!) and comfort (marble can feel cold, especially nowadays!) Let me think about that and look at other designs for the floor.

@Dan C - Those are perfect. Exactly what I have in my shower. You have to use small tiles on a shower floor. The shower floor NEEDS smaller tiles to be able to pitch correctly to the drain AND to have more grout lines to prevent slipping in the shower. Those will be perfect for both places. It's not cold when the hot water is running on it.

Makes sense, thanks! If you may, can you please share how you maintain the floor tiles? Marble needs a little more TLC than porcelain or ceramic apparently since it's more porous.

@Dan C - I have white ceramic subway tile on my shower walls. I have honed marble hex on the shower floor and I have a marble slab on my shower bench, and on the pony walls. I've also got polished marble on the floor outside the shower. I actually don't do anything special to clean the shower. I use soft scrub on the shower floor, and scrubbing bubbles on the bench. I haven't had any problems. I just use soap and water for the floor outside the shower. I know they have marble cleaners, but I haven't used them.

@Dan C - Thanks. That shower was done 10 years ago, and still looks current. I couldn't do a niche as the shower has 2 exterior walls, one wall has the shower valves on it and the other had the shower door and pony walls. So I opted for the corner shelves.

Dan - have you completed your bathroom renovation? What color/type of vanity did you select? Countertop? Would love to see photos if you’ve finished!

Hi @Design Girl, I thought I might ask, where did you get the quartered corner caddies in the shower? Are they made of marble as well?

@Dan C I got the shelves where they fabricated my marble. They were made from the same slab
