How do I light an outdoor mural?

The electrician is there today and so I need to figure out a solution ASAP but Google is not being my friend this morning. A good friend is an artist and we’re planning to commission her to paint a mural or tile mosaic (she does both) on this big empty wall of a 1st floor balcony. But we’d like to light it at night, because this is the angle that people will see driving down the street. But we also want to be able to sit out there without being blinded, but not often because the main balcony is on the south side. Photo taken approx 9am.

Any suggestions on best lighting?

Put an angled high hat in the ceiling

I should mention that there will be a ceiling fan with a long extension centered on the balcony. I also want to avoid a strobe effect.

I think @cpartist means to place it in the soffit. That's what I was thinking.

So you're installing a custom piece of art for the (mostly) sole enjoyment of people driving down the street? Who shouldn't be looking at it anyway, since they should be keeping their eyes on the road. Why not put it somewhere that you can enjoy it on an ongoing basis (you said that you won't be on that balcony often) ?

I wouldn't illuminate it so people can see the stars or, what's increasingly rare, DARKNESS. People will see it during the day. That's enough. If you MUST do this, avoid contributing to light pollution and use dark sky lighting fixtures.

We are installing art for our enjoyment, in a place that would otherwise be a huge flat boring stuccco wall but it happens to be where we will see it every time we enter our home (the entrance gate is just below that balcony) and happens also where the very few people driving by can enjoy it, too. We will be using that balcony more during the day, but want it lighted at night. I don’t think that’s too crazy a thing to ask. That is the runway side and it’s a day-only airport, so that’s where we’ll watch planes/friends landing and taking off.

The only other place to paint a wall mural would be on the ground level east side of the house, where we would only see it coming and going (the front door is on the back south side of the house).

I also would prefer a tiled mosaic but time and $$$ will factor in. This isn’t her first outdoor exposed mural. She’ll have to put a UV protectant layer on it. We will also have her art inside the house, on a smaller scale, since we will be moving with the pieces we already own. The toughest thing is deciding what design. I love her birds and flowers but she just finished some octopus paintings that are terrific. Our theme is usually sea turtles, though.

Either way, this is our final home, fate permitting. The art will stay when we leave.

Like my baby sea turtle backsplash that will stay in my current home, it will break my heart to find out if new owners destroy it, so it’s better not to know sometimes. (especially knowing how much those tiles cost and the fact that they are irreplaceable - the artist has changed his firing technique so I may not decide to get one for the new house)

But the point is, I am having a hard time finding outdoor-rated lights that aren’t sconces or other accent lighting. I need task lighting.

Thinking though, I know some art museum people. Maybe they can steer me the right direction for my search.

    simple;

angle cut hood on an industrial "barn style" light, look up High lite MFG or Barn light, it does not have to be farmhouse looking fyi it can be very modern as well by going with something that is more of a landscape light on an angled mounting bracket.

I would need to know the size in order to help with what would work the best bulb, shade, and also what location are you in will you have weather?

Other wise yes a recessed light in the soffit with an eyeball of sorts will work.

    Focus industries, low voltage sl-25

    hi-Lite mfg: sign lighting

    Nicor flop trim kit.
