Adding windows - is it possible and for how much?

We just closed on a bi-level/raised ranch. It's great but lacking in windows. Has anyone created new windows in an existing home and can you share approx how much to expect cost-wise and time frame on a project like this? I am also considering installing skylights somewhere but I have read that it is best to ddo that when you are replacing the roof. And can these even be done in the winter?

Search YouTube (see the link). Cost depends Greatly on the the type of exterior siding. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=adding+a+window+to+an+existing+wall

It also depends on the area in which you live in. Some places very expensive, some places, not so much. The only way you will know for sure is to have a contractor come and look at it and give you an estimate.

About 4 years ago, I replaced a window at the old cabin due to water damage.

A neighbor at the cabin has a Class A License, he acted as the Project Manager.

I removed the window and damaged wall (wood siding) , I replaced the wall and window. I later applied three coats of paint to the wall. A local handyman helped for a day, he did the heavy lifting and site clean up.

Including planning, shopping, R&R, painting, cleanup....30-40 hrs, and less than $1k of materials.

planning, 2 people, 1 hr total.

shopping, 2 people, 2 trips, 1 hr shopping, 2 hrs travel time: 12 hrs!

    R&R, 1 person, 8 hrs, 1 person 4 hrs. 12 hrs.

Painting, 3 coats, 1.5 hrs. Total

Cleanup, 2 people, 1/2hr, plus travel time to dumps, 1 hr, dump fee $40. time at dumps 1/2 hr., total 4 hrs.

Duct work or electrical behind the walls Would be additional cost.

Based on the pic it should be doable. I'd recommend one large (or twin) unit as opposed to two separate openings for cost considerations. One hole, one header, so on and so forth, that will be much more affordable than two. As mentioned earlier, the exterior wall cladding will impact the cost and ease of this, but unless there is something crazy going on on the exterior, it should be doable. Expect a few grand give or take depending on details.

Agree. Average cost is a few thousand. $2500-$3000.

It depends. Is this a block, brick, or wood home? Is there plumbing/electriic behind the wall? I'm a big fan of windows. If it is within your budget you won't regret it. I am hoping to add three more windows to my house. I don't trust skylights or solar tubes because they leak.

Don't forget to add the cost of the permit as is required in many areas, when adding windows. A good quality skylight installed by a highly skilled roofing contractor should not result in leaks. I would not imagine your roof slope to be very steep on a raised ranch. Do your research on this issue before investing in skylights. Your costs will be determined by the composition of the windows, the manufacturer, your home's exterior, electrical issues, and the contracting company. I'd wait to re-roof/skylight until next Spring, but you may wish to secure a contracted time in advance, given wait times.

Thank you all for the helpful answers. I am reaching out to contractors for pricing and hopefully, it is in my budget. I was feeling sad about not having enough windows in the new place so this is exciting.
