fence posts

Finally replacing fence along back of our yard. We will take it up to 5 feet high, since we have a pool.

We were thinking of doing a metal fence (wrought iron look) with wooden posts. That is a golf course behind us, so the view is important and privacy is not a concern. There is also a gate out to the golf course. (Our short cut to the clubhouse.)

Our yard is a hodgepodge of fencing, with a wooden privacy fence on one side (I've attached an image) and a chain link fence along the other side. We don't want to go through the expense of replacing the chain link fence on the one side but want some continuity somewhere in our yard! So, we thought that nice solid wooden posts would tie in to the wooden privacy fence along at least part of our yard.

Questions....would wooden posts look better than standard metal posts? If so, what size should we go with? Is 6x6 substantial enough for a 5 foot high fence? Should we add molding to it to dress the post up? What kind of cap should we put on? How high should the posts be above the height of the metal fence panels? Any special treatment for the gate?

Any and all suggestions welcome! (So are photos!) We don't want to break the budget completely though as we have many other more important and expensive renovations to do.

Photo #1 is obviously the fence we are replacing. Photo #2 shows the style of our side fence.
