Put an entry station with a table, mirror and lamp to set down keys, purse, wallet, change, etc. Also get an entry unit with a bench, hooks for coats, cubbies for family members at the top and bottom. Depending on where you live, you may have quite a mess of salt, snow, mud, water, etc. Therefore, be sure to make this area as waterproof and easy to clean as possible. If you still have more room after that, develop a sitting area with a lamp for a mini library, desk and chair for an office, music area, or extra storage.

The entry rug could be much longer. You also want tie chair farther down the wall, some kind of storage for the shoes etc.

There's a large closet by the front door arch where we keep coats, shoes, cubbies. etc, so we don't need more space for that, so I'm looking for ideas of how to fill the space. What about a large bench? Would i go for long, with a back? thanks

In that case you need a piece of furniture and art to fill the wall. The tall cabinet needs to go and the other cabinet centred on the wall it’s on. You have small pieces all pulling towards the door making it seem like a small space. The chair is too close to the entrance
