colour suggestions

Hi everyone,

So I’m looking to do a little DIY project in my kitchen.
I’ve been renting this place forever, and have no intentions of leaving anytime soon, so I don’t mind putting some sweat & $$ into this home.....with that said, I still think it’s not in my best interest to spend a big chuck of change in redoing the whole kitchen.
The cabinets, I will be doing a simple shaker style upgrade keeping the existing box frame of the cabinets.
I will also be keeping the existing floor & countertop (for now at least).
My dilemma & where I need advice, is that I would like to paint the bottom cabinets a different colour then white....but I have no clue what colour will work with the existing countertop/flooring. I am replacing the cabinets pulls with new black ones that will be arriving soon.
Suggestions are greatly appreciated
My apologies for the mess 🤦🏽‍♀️

    What is the landlord's budget?

None, since everything is in working order, and the changes are simple for aesthetics purposes, any changes/renos come out of my pocket

Can we see the adjoining rooms?

The colors in those rooms will inform what the colors in your kitchen should be.

Pretty table, and I like the runner, like an Aran sweater!

Does the kitchen also open up to a living room? Is the living room painted gray as well?

Thanks @loobab.....No, the wall next to the table separates the living room from the kitchen area. Yes, the same grey is throughout the apt.
The two accent chairs in the living room we’re just given to me, so I’m going to be changing the curtains to white to tone down the various grey tones going on....but that’s a whole different post 😂😂

Oh, I'm sorry, my laptop cannot discern the colors in that photos.

Can you please describe them to me?

Oh! I could really use a fireplace right now!

Yes, the color of the living room sofa and chair, and the shelves in the living room?

What colors are the living room curtains?

And are the living room walls gray too?

So the living room walls are the same grey as the kitchen on top & the bottom are white.
The living room sofa is white and the two chairs are grey.
The living room curtains are currently grey, but I’m going to be changing them to white.
The carpet is a jute natural rug, with a white sheepskin rug on top.
    Coffee table is white.
    The shelving units are black

I wouldn't change the cabinet fronts at all.

You could paint the lowers dark gray and then get red or green kitchen accessories such as a tea kettle and dish towels, floor mat, etc.

You could carry some of that color into the living room in a print in the throw pillows, or a pretty print living room curtain.

If you really want to be daring you can do a black and white checkerboard treatment for the lower cabinets in the kitchen.

Don't worry about the floor, no one will even look at it.

And u think it will work with the brown faux granite countertop?

Black and brown go well together, especially with the white and gray.

Do you have a photo editing program to try it out?

Maybe someone else who does will hop on and do it for you.

Otherwise, the old fashioned way is print out some of your pictures on the computer and just color them in.

No I don’t....definitely need to get one

I think I’ll have to try that for now 😂

And how artistic are you- Oh, you don't need to be artistic, if you can hold a pencil, you can hold a brush.

On those kitchen cabinets, you can do a black and white check with some sort of little design intermittently superimposed over the checks here and there.

What color and type of design is up to you.

It could be little teapots and/or frying pans.

    Or flowers.

You could do it freehand or use a stamp or a stencil.

Hey, if you want to be a little crazy, you could do a check in fuschia and purple like Betsey Johnson.

Just make sure you wouldn't get tired of that.

    No holiday in US.

I would definitely have to see how it would look first.....

You can buy some pieces of poster board, here they are a dollar at the dollar store and paint them up in all the different colorways and prints you are considering, and tape them to a lower cabinet and live with it for a while and see how you feel about it.
