Kitchen Redesign Ideas

last modified: 5 years ago

Hi All,

We are planning to Remodel/Redesign the kitchen. Idea is to make it bright. But we have a budget and time limitations.

We are planning to change old appliances . And painting the cabinets . Also we want to change the island to a bigger island with sitting .

Any ideas or suggestions will be very useful.

I posted a similar post under Kitchen but per suggestion reposting it under Design Ideas

Doesn't look like you have room for a larger island

We need a to scale floor plan before commenting on a larger island but I sure would be planning on removing those jutting cabinets in front of the stools. Painting cabinets is ahuge expense so be prepared for that and unless you have painted many cabinets do not DIY. All the bulbs in the space need to be changed to LEDs 4000K before choosing anything else. The floors will drive color choices so no pure white kitchen . A counter depth fridge will make the space feel bigger instantly.

The soffit and lighting got to go before anything else. Then I’d paint the cabinets a green. Or at least half of them. White countertops or even a black soapstone island. Options are endless. Narrow it down. Tell us your style and what you need from this space

Added one more picture to get idea of space. I want to remove the breakfast nook (table on the side) and planning to enlarge the island for sitting. I am planning to call a professional and no DIY. I do not want any brown cabinets and doors so planning to paint the doors white but I am still in doubt of what color will be good for cabinets in case I do not change the floor and countertop. All appliances will be new Stainless Steel appliances.

Soffit is present and I donot think I will be able to remove that. One way is to add crown molding to give it a good look.

In the last pic posted, it looks as if you have space to extend the island in front of the fridge and pantry. In that case, I'd re-orient the long side of the island parallel to the fridge wall, with seating facing the fridge, and to make the fridge aisle wider. If space allows, an extra seat can go on the short side. Can you add plumbing to the island?

Other than that, my advice is the same as that on the other thread--use as many drawer base cabinets as possible, and post a measured, overhead drawing of the kitchen and adjoining spaces.

Thanks for advising about the island. By plumbing do you mean adding a prep sink?

Right now I donot want to change the cabinets. I can only change the doors or paint them as well. One question, if I don't change the floor and granite, what color options I have for painting the cabinets and doors.

Yes, I think a prep sink would work well with the longer island, and you would be facing the room as you prep. Use drawer bases on the larger island--or are you just planning to use a wider top to provide a deeper seating overhang? In that case make sure you have a good support system for the overhang.

I have a quirky sense of color and style, so I will let others advise you on those issues. :)

I am thinking of a new island only with seating overhang as you mentioned. I want to have prep sink but it totally depends on how expensive the total island cost will be..

Another thing I am thinking, if the tile floor will not match the white or bright colors, we can install vinyl planks.. I am not sure, how they will match the hardwood floor of family room.
