How do I decorate this?

I'm at a loss as to what to put in these shelves. Any ideas?

I think what's there now is just fine. your room is very neat and tidy, so cluttering up the shelves won't look right.

(may I suggest you lower your artwork though? should really only be 4-6" above the sofa. and I'd prob center the sofa/tables beneath the trio. Maybe they are and it's just the photo!)

I agree the shelves look fine now. Also agree with Beth re lowering the art (which is nice!).

I like the vase collection you show in the one photo. However, I feel the glass ones do not stand out well. Consider pottery, using colors from the room: burnt orange would be a nice choice.

As all have suggested, it looks fine. What i would suggest also is you move the 2 chairs into the room a little. The one on the left, move in and put the basket next to the fireplace. Some drapery would help soften the room.

I've often thought about drapes, however, the windows are so close to the corners and fireplace surround I just feel like it would be too awkward.

You could do something similar to this.

That's beautiful, but wouldn't that cover up half my window?

You have lots of light coming into the room

A D, one more thought, if you don't mind. I keep looking at the art above the sofa. Have you ever considered placing the right one in the center? It's such a nice room. The little peeks into the kitchen and dining room make me think you've done a nice job all over.

the 2nd cabinet photo you posted -- I think those knicknacks look best.

the glass items in the 1st photo are too matchy, too sparse, and some are too tall. I'd put them somewhere else, clustered together.

Back to your art again. The grouping seems too wide for the furniture below. I would try the two pieces on the left centered with the sofa, 5" above it and just one hand's breadth between them. The 3rd piece I'd hang 5" above the mantel and hang the clock in the kitchen. I'm not a fan of twigs as decor so I'd remove those from the mantel. I suggest you keep your eye out for some new pillows to bring that pop of orange down from the art to the seating level. A nice throw tossed across the hassock would be pretty. "I would try the two pieced on the left centered with the sofa, 5" above it and just one hand's breadth between them. The 3rd piece I'd hang 5" above the mantel..."

    Nice!

For the tv cabinet, you could try a grouping or groupings of 3 items, different height/size. Look around the house for items to "group".

this is how I did my tv set up.

I know a lot of people don't like fake plants, but it does add some "greenery" to the display.

I agree with @decoenthusiaste to hang 2 pieces of art above the sofa and the 3rd above the fireplace.

    Add some colorful pillows.

Finally, a coffee table would add some airiness to the room. The ottoman feels really bulky and the color isn't working.

Is the love seat centered on the fireplace?

You really have a nice room, just need a few touches.

LOL gotta love unsolicited advise that is for the most part all very personal preferences!! Your art looks eye level when standing, and I would want heads to hit it when sitting, so would leave it. Coffee table, well the ottomans are all the rage are they not? If it were my room I would have to find a way to hang drapery panels not for use necessarily but FOR ME they are the finishing touch in a room. They add color/softness/warmth. I am not much of a minimalist and for me any room w/o them looks not finished or of the minimalist preference. Both of your pics of the entertainment center look nice btw. My guess is the glassware shows up much more in person. The books et al were nice too. You have a good eye. Trust it and do what pleases YOU.

I do agree that our furniture needs to shift down the wall a bit. I think things got out of whack a bit when we cleaned the carpet. However, I do like my artwork they that it is. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but I feel with the wall being so tall, it looks better to have them more at eye level.

The pillows do have more color than they show in the pics.

I ordered some different things to try up on the shelves and will continue to play around.

Thank you to those who were helpful!

it does look ok from that angle, although if you had larger art, it would help w/the taller ceiling.

(Normally the art should be 2/3 the length of the sofa, not the sofa and the tables)

Eye level is usually 60" from the ground to the middle of the art piece. (if you're 6'5", then eye level is going to be higher for you, but average is 56-60")

arcy, I was very polite when I mentioned it my comment. I just suggested it. nothing else.

and it really isn't a personal preference if you're asking design advice. (people hang their curtains a foot above the floor. that's a preference?) I've seen people hang art over 6' above the floor (bottom of the frame is 6'!) unless you're Shaq, you'll have to tilt your head back to view it. Those are people who don't know any better.

as for hitting it on the sofa, uh, no. how many times do you tilt your head all the way back to touch the wall ? I have mine hung at 6" and have never hit it once.

all professional examples of correctly placed (and sized) artwork on a tall wall behind a sofa

If op likes it where it's at, it's all good. It was merely a suggestion

A D , for what its' worth, I really dislike drapes of any type....or any window coverings. Have had 8 homes and drapes never figure large in my decorating. Go with what you love!

    Very nicely decorated home!

Like the glassware in the cabinet.

Like the 3 pieces of art and how they align with top of lamps, and complimentary colors.

Agree, drapes would be challenging to add and block windows. If light filtering needed, would use shades.
