Need Large Wall Art Help

I am getting a new cobalt blue velvet sectional the end of next month and I am moving things around and trying to find art to go on the wall behind the couch. I read that the art should be 2/3 the size of the sofa and the long part of the sofa which will be on the wall is 113 inches. I love Matisse-especially the period (1908?) when he started using all those bright colors- especially that bright blue. I can’t find Matisse print however that is big enough. I have found a few 60 inch width on Wayfair and I’m including those pictures.
The mirror that’s currently over the sofa- is going to be moved to my dining room over the console table. I am in the process of putting up 2 sconces that match my dining room chandelier -underneath that mirror is another electrical light and I’m going to put one sconce there. I am not sure if I just need to wait until the sectional gets in before even look at artwork. Thank you for your input!!!

All of these are 60 inches wide which is the largest that I can find.

I would wait for the sectional - seeing the blue in your space might help you decide if you want to play it up with your artwork or go more neutral.

It is shoved in the corner! I have only lived here three months and I’ve been working on rearranging furniture-the new sectional is not going to be as long on that side so hopefully it will work better. So 3 pieces are okay as long as they are roughly together 2/3 of couch size ? Thank you!!

Rachel-that’s a really good point. It is a weird room because it is downstairs so I am hoping the blue is not too dark in the room.

I like the first print a lot. Not sure what the poll is for? Agree the sofa, ( new one too) needs to move closer to fireplace. It can stay up against long wall, but other side needs to float. You can put sofa table behind it with lamp so you have light too. Leave space under stairs empty.

Please post photos of all 4 walls of room.

2/3/-3/4 of the back of the sofa.

@Kodiac23 That poll was an error that I couldn’t figure out how to fix. 🤯 Once I have that mirror moved and I get the other scones put up, I was going to try to move the new sectional in between the two wall sconces so will be pulled out from the short wall Should I just not have anything on that short wall then? The room is small-do you think it’ll work with the sofa table behind the new couch?

Maybe one of these original artworks would add some texture and contrast to your wall. Here are some ideas to ponder. Good luck and enjoy decor !

Thanks for the additional photos! It is a challenging space as far as a floor plan. But a nice area.

So, will the sofa you ordered be configured in this way? Long section along the wall and the chaise along the wall with the short door?

    Yes-exactly.

I also have this table in my garage from my old house that I could swap out if it goes better-this is the back of it.

Thanks. You don't really need a table behind the sofa.

Is there a way to cancel the sofa?

How many people need to sit here?

What I would have recommended is a sofa facing the tv. Then a couple of chairs to the right of the fireplace that could be swivel chairs.

I'd put a large arc lamp behind the sofa.

I don't know that you can pull that sectional up much (floor heat vent).

Are you willing to rethink this?

😢😭😤 It is a special order-what it says on the website I think I can cancel and it will be about a $400 return fee. I am going to call them and see for sure. I don’t have a problem rethinking it rather then spending money and it doesn’t work. So it would be a sofa facing the fireplace and then two swivel chairs to the right of the fireplace?

So I separated my sectional so I could see what a sofa would be like. This is a 98 inch piece. The problem is any chairs that I put there would be in front of part of the couch so I’m not sure if that would work- the room is so small. Thoughts?

Smart to use your existing furniture to play with.

Is your most recent arrangemnt having the sofa right on top of the dining table?

I meant the sofa facing the fireplace and then a couple of chairs here and/or along the wall if the sofa you buy is short enough.

How wide is the room (substracting the width of the stairway, since that will be your walkway). ?

    - I like sectional and would centre on the brick wall between the sconces, as wall needs to be better balanced/not feel empty - a focal wall with art will create interest and also ground the room.

    - The console feels awkward in that small space; I’d add a tripod floor lamp there instead

    - In regards to art, suggest holding off and purchase when you’ve got room completed and suggest testing out a few ideas and also add complimentary cushions. I’d spend the $400 return fee instead on a larger coffee table (if you like the sectional).

@CDR Design The living room is 13 1/2 x 20 to the fireplace. But by the time I take out that walkway, it’s really only 10 feet wide.

@Maureen Love that tripod lamp! May I ask where it’s from! So that would replace the lamp on the console?
I do love the sectional-love the velvet and the cobalt blue. I always seem to go for a sectional because the first thing my son does when he comes over is lay down on the couch. Lol it’s just with this small space I have to be very careful with what I put down there.

Love the texture of the pillows!

    Found it❤️

That’s a great price! I was recommending that console be removed, so that small wall doesn’t look cramped. In a small room, when all walls aren’t filled it can feel more spacious, gives more breathing room. Your dining room is full, so try to reduce a bit on other side.

I think the sectional is better visually and flow wise vs having 3 pieces and you mentioned it works for your family. Have your measured and taped out, to see how it will feel?

With the $400 return fee eliminated 😀 I’d get a new coffee table that compliments the wood trim on sectional and tripod lamp. See styles and sizing info below and be sure to measure table out with tape.

    https://stylebyemilyhenderson.com/blog/rules-for-picking-a-coffee-table-105-best-coffee-tables

In regards to art, which was your original query, make sure sconces and art work well together size and style wise.

I thought it was a great price too. Thank you for your advice about the console. And I get it -it just adds a bunch of busyness in that corner -where that tripod light will kind of calm it down. Yes-I have taped it out and then I took apart my existing sectional and pushed it into where the new one will be. The new one is a tiny bit longer so I pushed that right hand piece all the way to the wall i stead of meeting the left side piece, so it’s shorter but the sectional is longer. It actually feels much more open than the sectional I have. Thank you so much-I am feeling pretty good about it. I am going to wait until the sectional comes next month and then worry about the art. I am ordering that lamp though. Thanks Maureen!!

Glad I could help. Good luck.

I had a thought about you adding an additional sconse. Maybe you don’t need and I would wait until you get your sectional. It will force you to centre art in between, which may not line up to sectional. Here is an idea and then add art over couch appropriately. (Be sure to use a modern style.)

If adding another sconse, I think a collage will better balance wall if sectional is not centeted vs using a large piece of art.

I am glad that you mentioned the sconces. I have already purchased two that match my dining room chandelier. They are not modern. I can return them and get something more contemporary. I notice your images are brass. Is that OK to mix with the polished nickel and the black rod iron that I already have an a room? Here is what I bought a few weeks ago. Thank you!!

Ps-behind that mirror that I’m moving there is already a outlet for the sconce to be put up.

I know they mix metals-I just don’t kno the rules.

    last modified: 5 years ago

No rules, but it might be nice to compliment your chandelier, like you wanted. I would return those, as they are too formal; you have to consider your sectional, the brick wall, tripod lamp, etc. Something like below may be a good compromise for both living and dining room. Don’t be too worried about the metal‘s finish matching exactly to your chandelier and get the style you like.

Great! That is very helpful! Thank you once again!!

    Good luck.

So oh waiting on my couch but I have two pictures that I really like but I am waiting to order them until my couch comes just to make sure. But I did get the sconces and the tripod light and it really has made a big difference in there. So much roomier than I did. Thank you for your insights!!

    So far, so good.

I also swapped coffee/end tables with my cottage-these seemed more contemporary and seemed to fit better.

So-Quick question. I moved from a house into a condo and I need more storage rooms so I was thinking of replacing that console table with a buffet in the dining room. Do you think I have room or will it be just too much? Here are three that I had in mind. Any thoughts?? Thank you!!!!

    Might lighten up the area?

    ???

I think you can do a buffet. should be taller than the table height and not brown As suggested above . Pretty room.

Thank you- do you think the buffet with the mirrored front is too much mirror? I like the style and wood color.

Thanks for all your help! I wanted to show you how it turned out. So glad that someone suggested the sconces and the light in the corner -it really made a huge difference.

Looks great ! You should be proud. love the furry accessories too!
