First cahnge all the bulbs to LED 4000K then see how you like the space . Every thing you have is sucking light so you need really good lighting. As for a feature wall IMO those are best done when you have a whole wall not interupted with anything. A counter depth fridge would make the space feel bigger and some chairs in a color and no table cloth on the table unless you are eating.

I have dark cabinets and changing my walls to a white paint really lightened the space and freshened it up more than I expected. Maybe a color like your floor to connect the floor to the room more. Some fun hardware and copper pieces are nice with dark cabinets as is brass as well. A black and white rug maybe too like the ones here.

You want to "dress up" and Houzzers are saying "lighten up." I think you can do both. Everyone above has made valid suggestions. In addition to those, install a family friendly magnetic bulletin board somewhere so you can clear off the fridge. A cluttered fridge doesn't look dressy. When that one dies, see if a counter depth one will fit that spot. When you have the budget for it, a lighter countertop would do wonders to make the place brighter, and you could dress it in the latest trendy fashion that you like. Dress up the floor with a larger rug to fill the work area. Ruggable has washable ones at 15% off right now. How about a pretty centerpiece on the table? If that's a bistro height table, then "dressy" would mean a standard table, IMO. Bistro height is pretty casual, not really accessible for elders or toddlers, and just not a look I like.

Thank you all for the feedback. The lights are all led already. I love the thought of painting the walls lighter. The table is also dark so I was hoping for a contrast colour I could use to dress up the shelves and table cloth etc.
