Assuming you are going to get a really good paint job for the cabinets, and that there is a serious point of discussion here on Houzz--

Why choose only one color?

You could do

1. Blue for the island and creamy white on the rest

1. Blue for the island and the lowers and creamy white for the uppers

If your family room adjoins the kitchen unite the two with more blue in the family room via throw pillows, art, rug, etc.

Your small appliances are black, and your large appliances are black and stainless and that goes well with blue.

Black kitchens are a current trend.

Trends go out of style.

Black is depressing for a reason. Do you really want that in your kitchen?

Furthermore, black shows every drop of dust and every crumb.

You can also really jazz up your kitchen with some hardware, brass or something likes that looks just marvelous with navy.

If you don't want to look too maritime, you could go with a color like Hale Navy which is very popular.

Mixed metals look nice, and prevent your kitchen from looking matchy-matchy.

(Just like you wouldn't want the rest of your decor looking like it was all purchased all at once from the same place either.)

I think you could do the walls the same creamy (not yellowy) white as the cabinets as the backsplash.

If could put up some more photos of the kitchen, that would be helpful.

Now, this is a totally cray-cray (as the kids say nowadays) suggestion.

If you have a wall in the dinette (talk about an old fashioned word!) area, okay the breakfast nook.

What would be fun and interesting would be a blue and white stripe.

You could do it vertically or horizontally.

Mind you, I would find that sort of thing vertiginous.

But I have seen it many times in the decorating magazines done to wonderful effect.

Or the white wall with just one blue stripe.

Or have a chair rail and do white above and blue above.

The other advantage of the chair rail is to protect the wall from your children (and other half) who may not be the most restrained when they pull their chairs out.

I would also replace that muffin light fixture over the sink.

There are so many other more attractive ones to illuminate the area while doing that odious task of dish-washing!

You can get semi-flush mounts that hang down just a bit, or a pendant, whatever you like.

They can be all glass, in transparent (not for me, too much glare, yes, I really am persnickety) or translucent, closed or open, with or without metal embellishment and with one or two-tone metal.

But look, I am getting carried away.

That's the fun of Houzz.

Oh, I almost forgot in all that meandering- (It's not just old rivers that meander!)

Have you considered at all getting a proper hood vent?

That is a whole vent by itself to go over your cook top, not a makeshift one attached to the bottom of your microwave.

A proper hood vent would work so much better in clearing smoke, moisture and airborne oils and food particles including carcinogens (yesiree bob!) from the air in the kitchen.

And your cabinets will stay ever so much cleaner.

And you do want that after spending so much time and effort and money on re-doing the kitchen, right?

Love all the info Loobab!!!! Seriously!! I really want it like gold Matte hardware but I was thinking it was going to clash with the appliances. Now I will not be so afraid not to match! The light above sink will go for sure! As for the vent we have talk about that just haven’t gotten a quote to see if it’s in our budget.

Maybe get a quote on the vent before you proceed with anything else, you need to know how much money you will have left.

Because there is the work in the roof, and the cost of the vent itself.

While you’re at it, do you plan to update the fan/light fixture in the living room? I know that’s not a response to your questions, but the traditional design seems to be at odds with your overall esthetic. Good lock with your project.

As well as updating fan 🤦🏻‍♀️...I have realized in a very short tine that once you start updating your kitchen there’s other things you’re gonna notice around the house that needs to be updated. I thought this was all Fun( it’s more Stressful than I though)but it’s ok! Thank you.

With your counter and backsplash, I’m afraid white cabs might be too stark in contrast to your adjoining room. Plus, it will be hard to find a white that blends with both surfaces. I would go with a slightly darker shade from your counter for your cabs And do black hardware.
