Hire GC or not for kitchen range replacement

We are looking at replacing our gas freestanding range with a slide-in induction range and know that there are specific things that need to be done right for this to work well (measuring exactly, filler for back space, etc) and so we are wondering if we should be involving/hiring a GC or can rely on the appliance store folks and/or countertop and cabinet folks to 'oversee' the whole project? Thanks!

    Do you feel lucky?

Sometimes, the trades do their job without supervision.

Hiring a GC is hiring someone with the experience, leadership skills and common sense to get the job done. Expect to pay 10% of the job cost. You are paying for the GCs Rolodex.

If you are not able to over see the whole project, I recommend a GC/Project Manager.

Based on your scope of work, I would depend on the appliance store for installation and “etc”. I recommend being present and document the installation with photos.

Thanks for the opinion. In your scenario above, how would the countertop 'filler' part of the project be coordinated and interfaced?

I would make the appliance store the “GC,” they perform and are responsible for everything.

Do you have someone who will perform the trim/filler work, I suspect the appliance store has a Rolodex.

As the customer, I recommend you perform due diligence.

The appliance store will probably not do the plumbing (capping off gas lines) and electrical (upgrades) necessary of installation. Most appliance stores will do a minimum of 'plug and play'. Hire a licensed contractor who does small jobs in your area. Ask neighbors for recommendations.

You won't find a GC who will take on anything as small as that.

In many areas, there are plenty of one-man shops who keep as busy as they want doing small kitchen/bath work. You don't need a person with an office or a secretary and staff. As usual, look for recommendations and referrals.

We just had a new gas slide in installed -- local appliance store handled everything -- sent out a guy to measure, took care of the granite piece that had to be removed (due to change in range design). They did a great job at a reasonable price.

An appliance store has a Rolodex.

When we lived in Monterey, the only high-end appliance store did not offer installation, service or delivery. I was told, "Have your contractor take care of it." We went 75 miles to shop in San Jose instead and still got free delivery.

Our local appliance store: We have licensed contractors to handle it all for you.
