Hi ppl. We run a mostly citrus /cocoa estate in the island of Trinidad West Indies, high rainfall area. Over past weeks we have noticed oval or irregular shaped brown lesions on the barks of many of our trees, especially the Tangelos. The bark starts out looking dark brown and wet. On removing the bark there are small insects that look ant-like. Other lesions where the bark has spontaneously fallen off, reveal small cream colored worm like creatures at least 5mm long.

Thanks to all of you guys for your advice, We are working with a diagnosis of phytophthora. The lesions extend right down to the base, the soil. I had also been thinking of a Brazilian thing called Bahia bark disease, if anyone is interested, but my wife, the brains (and brawn) of the outfit has thrown it out

this is an old cocoa house, with a moveable roof for drying cocoa in the sun

Do you folks have extensions to your local universities that would be able to assist you? (Not that you might not be able to get help here, but this might also be a specialized local insect and we may not know the legalities of local treatments either--I can barely handle Canadian laws on insecticides most days!)

I might suggest taking samples of everything to them for assistance and advice.

(Also, what a beautiful place; I'm looking at photos of it now).
