The reason it helps in the summer is not because it cools your home, but the feeling of cooler air across your skin makes you feel... cooler. So you’re less likely to keep turning the thermostat lower.

If you're in a cold region, reversing blades for winter use will assist in keeping heat closer to the floor, where you would be seated. My utility bills are lower when fans are in use. You may want to update the fans if blade pitch is insufficient to adequately move air. There are any number of articles re: this topic.
