slate tiles don’t match

We have a slate patio in the house we just bought and given the multi colored look, i assumed it must be something like MSI Multi Classic https://www.msisurfaces.com/slate/multi-classic/ - to confirm, I checked with the previous owner.

Long story short, i ordered MSI Multi Classic slate to extend the existing patio - although i really like the new slate color better, it doesn’t match the existing stone ! Not wanting to stop the work (stone tile material returns were not going to be accepted anyway), i agreed to proceed - hoping there is a way to achieve cohesion.

Any ideas ?

Is this actual slate or a tile made to look like slate? I guess either way this comment will apply. Natural slate comes from different sources so often not the exact same look and man made tiles ar from different dye lots and there can be huge differences over time.You need to take a pic from further back showing the whole patio so we can get a feel for the space . Sometimes just a rug can break the look of mismatched floor.

Actual slate tiles. I will take proper pics this weekend when work gets complete.

Looks like you have a natural break with the pillar & edge of existing patio that should help overall look. I’m guessing you are planning to use same color grout for new section? I wonder too if the color match will be better when the new tiles are hosed off to clean. They’re bound to be coated in dust.

They are not the same slate; not much you can do about now. You've laid them in a different direction which helps break it up.

yeah the new tiles have to be grouted yet. Planning to use gray grout to match the new tiles.

Had to use a diff layout because of the way the new area turns - thinking may be we use these tiles on the left side of the existing patio also - that way the existing patio is in the center and it looks intentional ?

If your goal is cohesion, don’t use a different color grout for the new section.

If possible I would replace the tile so that it matches.

so many diff colors of slate. Autumn slate, multi-classic slate, Calif Gold slate,

Select Pink slate

looks like you've mixed and matched.

remember to seal the tops of your slate tiles BEFORE grouting. otherwise cleanup will be a nightmare.

use a medium gray grout.

the existing patio section (besides using a diff slate) uses red grout - don’t think i want that on the new section. Using Pewter from Custom

I hate to rip up the existing section - the slate tiles are in excellent condition. Hopefully the colorfulness of the various slate tiles will be pretty and not like an eye sore.
