Small blooms, long stems

I have a potted Phantom paniculata going into its fifth summer in my garden. The second and third years I pruned and I got massive flowers, up to 7 or 8 inches long and 6 inches in diameter. Last year, I didn’t prune, and the branches grew a good deal but produced very small flower heads. Did I fertilize too much? It got at least 6 hours of full sun and adequate water. Maybe I need to root prune. The plant should be a centerpiece and just looked a little sad. Any ideas?
