Hi, Can you post a floor plan with dimensions and electrical outlets marked? How much seating will you need?

I’m not sure how big of a project you want to and are willing to do. I would start by redoing the flooring. It seems to be screaming for something light bright and airy. I would surround the beams with something. Meaning if you can’t remove. Embrace them. Beef them up. As far as layout. Depends on the functions of the space. If there’s a tv going above the FP there you have it. Face a couch towards it. Add a rug and some lamps and accents. What’s the lighting deal in this space ?

Looks like you can use the posts and beams to separate the room into two areas, one for TV watching and one for a play area. Here's a nice example of boxing in the posts and using them for defining an area and also using a lower ceiling in one area.

Not sure of the height of your ceiling or your budget, but as you can see in most of these pics, they play with the height of the ceiling to further define the areas. The cozier space, i.e. the TV watching space, could have a ceiling that is as low as defined by the beams. The pic directly above, looks a lot like your space but finished out.

So think about defining two areas with the posts & playing with ceiling height. So if you had two rooms, one for play room and one for TV watching, how would you work in those spaces to place furniture.

Just don't take that chain saw to anything until you have a plan. :-)

There is a inexpensive but awesome way to make the post look finished. There is a websitewww.pacificcolumns.com They also have a catalog for $5.00 that is truly awesome. We bought the outside vinyl pillars and they were shipped and my husband put them around a square 4x4" steel post for our outside patio. They have been up for 3 years and still look brand new. No real wood to rot anymore. There is a very inexpensive software to draw out some plans its call ezblueprint.com For the fireplace you can also purchase fireplace surrounds from this same company with lots of trim work. Keep everything light colors because basements seem to always be dark. You can also do something with the ceiling by just putting molding to make it look sort of like our patio ceiling in the picture. Our patio is solid with vinyl the chain you see is where the water runs off the top. Anyway I hope that helps

We went through a house in Bella Vista Arkansas and the basement floor was done in tile but it looked like hardwood flooring. Really easy to keep clean and it look great. Also about your fireplace you could build rectangle hearth out of brick and put a piece of granite on top of the to sit on. Also if it burns real wood. Consider cutting out a small door like 30" wide X 36" tall . On the inside make it look like a cabinet doors; on the outside stack your wood so you don't being it through the house.
