I don't have many large pieces of fabric. When I do buy one that would be a good backing or background fabric, I hang it over a hanger in the closet. I have all my quarter to one yard pieces folded and put into stacks by color in a bookcase in my closet. The smaller pieces are kept by color in scrap booking columns that I bought at Jo-Ann Fabrics. That's also where I keep all the strips and squares I cut from scraps as I am making quilts. I have made it a point to not consider a quilt finished until all the odd-shaped scraps generated are cut into strips and squares and stowed away. That has really kept me organized and ready to make log cabin blocks or one of Bonnie Hunter's scrap quilts any time I get the urge.

I really like your scrap booking columns, Lois! I only have a couple of large pieces so those are in a tote. Larger scraps are folded and stacked in a cabinet. The really small scraps, mainly donated to me, are sorted by color and in shoe boxes. When I want to work cutting scraps up, I decide on a couple of patterns, label plastic shoe boxes with the sizes I need and get to work. That's not to say I don't have one tote full of random scraps too small to fold that haven't been sorted by colors. OK, maybe two. Christmas was in a separate plastic bin, until I needed the bin for something else. Now they are just stacked on a table in the basement. One large bin is full of fall colors since I've made several fall table runners. I would definitely be happier if I put some time in to sort the small scraps by color, but I figured I'd just pick a really scrapping quilt to make when I'm ready to start a new one.

My fabrics are in bins by colour. Large and medium all together, in some sort of order. The picture shows what it looked like just after construction and reorganizing. Since then, I have filled a bin with just 21/2 strips and another of string pieces, actually there are two of strings and random pieces ready for using next week, I hope. One Christmas bin is in the bedroom closet. The small baskets on top have special fabrics, like Kaffe Fassett.

I have way too much fabric and I have to start sharing it out. Or using it up.

Oh, Theresa, I am so jealous of your huge sewing room. Mine is just a 9'x10' bedroom. My Tiara is down in the lower level family room.

I have yardage on comic book boards in a bookcase, scraps are in a basket under my cutting table till I can cut them into 2.5 inch strips, charms or 2.5 inch squares. Then they are in plastic drawers under my ironing board. Strings are in color coded bags on a smaller book case. Christmas is kept together in a tote, flour sacks and I spy are in plastic drawers under the mid-arm frame.

Mine is on shelves sorted by size (wide backing, a yard or more, less than a yard but more than a fat quarter, fat quarters, and smaller than a fat quarter). My hubby is building me beautiful new sewing furniture and now I have storage for my strips, arranged by color family.

I keep all my large and small cotton quilt fabrics down to about a fat quarter size, in bins by organized by color. I have stuff everywhere in my room and while it is fairly organized for me, if anyone else came in to find something, they would not know where to start looking! I have larger plastic totes filled with a variety of other fabrics(home deco, fleece, denim, ect) shoved underneath tables in the room. My space is about 12' X 16' in finished lower level of house. Today I have the wood burner cranked up and I am quilting in a short sleeve tee shirt!

My quilting fabrics are on one side of the closet in my sewing room. Other fabrics are on the other side. Lace is sorted by type and wound around acid-free card stock in bins. I have one bin of scraps, sorted into ziplock bags by type.

I periodically unfold, iron and refold the fabric, although fading is not a problem in this north-facing room.

For my birthday and Christmas I ordered a Kangaroo Kookaburra cutting table. After we figure out how to get it upstairs, I will need to re-work my sewing space. But sandwiching quilts and cutting out garments in the floor is just not working anymore.
