Help with countertop

I am in the process of remodeling my kitchen. I am using white cabinets and I am using a vintage-like tile for the backsplash. The tile is mostly white, with gray and black running through it. It looks rather rustic. I need countertop suggestions. I would like a matt countertop that's not too busy. Suggestions??

I would go with a really dark black. I think the contrast would be stunning.

Leathered black or dark gray granite

I would agree. Would black show dirt and crumbs? Wondered about a dark gray?

I dont have personal experience with a fully black counter. I have leathered steel gray granite which has some variation and is very low maintenance.

    another option is soapstone

I’d go black too. My sister has installed two black countertop, one shiny granite, one leathered. Very happy with both. Crumbs will show, makes cleaning easy. I have a light granite and no one can see the crumbs or dried stuff. Very annoying when you think it’s clean.

I have an absolute black leathered granite kitchen table (6' x 3') and love it. Crumbs show but that's good - you see them right away. Somehow I've always had granite with a lot of movement for countertops, like I do now, and it's much harder to see crumbs and spots on those than on a solid color.

Love the black idea. And can’t wait to see it

Is there a leathered quartz product?

you're working backward. backsplash is the last thing and you should wait until the cabs/counters are in.

what kind of white cabs? style?

    what's on the floor?

Polished black anything shows crumbs, fingerprints, and dust.

    matte or leathered is better.

trying to pick a gray without having those tiles in your hand is impossible. there are warm grays and cool grays. pick incorrectly and you're in trouble.

do you have a picture of the kitchen so we can see what we're dealing with?

have you gotten samples of the tile in person? you can't match up something w/a picture.

they're on the rustic/ industrial side (the tiles). Is that the style you're after?

I do have a sample of the tile. I only have one sample right now, but will order a box. The cabinets are going to be white shaker style. I will be replacing the floor, but don't have anything picked out yet. I originally started looking for countertop, but a salesperson at the showroom suggested looking for backsplash because there are so many countertop options. I'm good with rustic, not industrial. There will some brown tone wood in the kitchen too. I don't have pictures of the kitchen because we are just in the planning stage.

salespeople are not designers. Flooring is a biggy and needs to be picked in combination w/the countertop. If you love that backsplash tile and can't live without it, then take it with you when looking for countertop selections. Most likely it will have to be something solid.

The flooring needs to work w/countertop and the tile. If you want a type of wood, it shouldn't be an issue.

if you want LVP, then that's going to take more doing because the colors vary so much.

what is the name/brand of the tile?

what is the style of this kitchen? your home?

I love your pick for the backsplash. I have soapstone countertops which are black with very scant white veining and I love them, and that backsplash would look great with them! I have SW Incredible White shaker style cabs. If you don’t want soapstone, there are many options out there for dark gray or black countertops. I know the designers say pick the backsplash last, but that always seems to be a big dilemma here on Houzz when people do that. That backsplash is beautiful, I hope you continue to work from that. I’m sure you can find a counter top and wood flooring that works well with your pick!

Thank you very much! What is the name of your countertop?

Also, my black soapstone isn’t shiny, but it’s black, so flour or crumbs do show up, but just a simple wipe down does the trick. If you want something that doesn’t show anything, then black probably isn’t for you. But most people wipe down countertops regardless of color anyway...right? So don’t be afraid!😄

Shelly, my countertops are just soapstone. They don’t have a company name. I worked with a stone company to find exactly the soapstone I wanted. They brought in several different ones before I found the slabs I wanted. Very black, with little veining.

Sounds beautiful! Thank you for all of your help.

Shelly, just a piece that shows the black and the little veining,

I’m definitely looking for somewhere to add your backsplash in my home! I really love it. I do have a space in my laundry I could put a backsplash and just haven’t been able to decide on anything! But, would appreciate the name of it. I really love it.

shelly, if you like the soapstone look but can't find a slab you like (soapstone comes in diff shades from green, gray to black)

then look at the Silestone Eternal Charcoal in the suede finish.

here's the gray one. I think it would also look great w/your tiles

(I have this lighter gray and it's very nice)

you could also do a solid white quartz and bring in a copper sink, darker faucets, hardware, lighting

I actually really like this combo because the copper sink bring out the veining in the tile.

It would be nice if we could see an actual picture of the tile

leathered black granite. (look at Jet Mist or Virginia Mist)

Not black or charcoal imo, if the tile has the brown/ rust tone. Both together might be harsh. hard.

Homeowner, thank you for sharing your countertop. It is beautiful!

Beth H, thank you for your help. I really like the gray. What is the name? Thank you!

here's my closeup. this is the suede. comes in a polished too.

they also have another gray. color is slightly different.

or, check out some other gray quartz

distressed brick backsplash w/the copper sink and white quartz

    I like this sink better
