Do you have bedside clocks?

last modified: 4 years ago

I remember when cell phones came out, we got rid of the digital alarm clocks in all the bedrooms. It was kind of nice, not having them collecting dust and taking up space.

Lately, I’ve been on a nostalgic table clock kick ... looking for small vintage-style ones.

This is the little metal one I just got for my guest room. Runs on one battery, no ticking sound, has an alarm if needed. It comes in black, cream, red, and light green. $17.99!

Next will be finding one for my bedroom. A little more elaborate than this one, I think.

I’d love to see your decorative table clocks!

I plan to put a small picture over it. We found an Al Savitt horse print from the ‘40s, may get it this weekend.

    That clock is very cute!

I have a digital clock radio that has the wrong time on it and is pointed toward the wall. I used to use it but hey. Pandemic. What's the point?

My actual alarm clock is also very cute and comes in to yell "coffee's ready".

2katz, in my searches for retro clocks, vintage clock radios have been coming up. Makes me nostalgic! Especially the flip number ones.

Fori, love the “coffee’s ready!” 😄

I have an antique alarm clock beside the bed in the guest room. However, it does not work! Basically, we have no alarm clocks in the house.

Wow, s/he really has an intense problem with clocks. And with being helpful. Or polite.

    😆 Gets an alert 😆

My SIL insisted on buying clocks for the guest rooms of my vacation place. I said everyone under 80 yo just uses their cell phone if they need to, but as they’re on vacation who checks the time? On her next visit, neither alarm clock was plugged in or even on the night stand any more. I guess other guests needed the outlet/space for their cell phone. 🤣

    Tina! Picture!

hhireno, ha! I agree — no clocks on vacations. ;)

Highjacking my own thread, but speaking of new/vintage decor, two things:

My Dala horse table runner hasn’t even been processed yet, and I ordered it on Jan 12 ... and tonight, my dad is dropping off this big old white cast iron sink he found in his pasture. He fully moved in a few months ago and is still finding cool things as he explores the land. I’ll post pics. :)

Don't forget that if your colors dont quite jibe, it's obviously because you've failed to replace your lightbulbs with 4,000 incandescent LEDs with a quarkutative impact ratio of 37:4/16ths, or somesuch nonsense.

LOL, Oco! The 4000 LEDs. Have mercy.

The clock thing is pretty funny. I do have clocks around the house! Yes, even in the dining room. It‘s more likely to be me in there working or reading, than guests, after all. It’s pretty, it’s small, and it’s certainly not there as decor.

And of course there are clocks on the nightstands. First, I wake up in the night and like being able to just roll over and see where the hour hand is. Second, once we are up, we can easily keep track of the time while getting ready for . . . Well, we aren’t getting ready for much these days, but still. And third, when I’m coming back from the bedroom, they are my guidelights to my side of the bed.

I have a clock in my dining room, aka my Zoom studio. The clock also serves my living room. The best placed clock in the house is in my bathroom. It reminds me I'm dawdling and better get some clothes on.

I need to get mine serviced (1917 mantel clock) ... but man, when that baby gongs out the hour, it probably does scare guests. 😁

My dh bought this old alarm clock at a flea market. What he failed to realize is that it needs to be wound every morning. So then he asked for a clock like mine. So now he has both on his side of the bed.

Love the vintage one, czarinalex! We looked for one like that last time we went to the antique mall, didn’t see any. But if anyone wants a brass horse clock, I can hook you up.

I swear, I lost count of them. Apparently, many hundreds of thousands of these were made, and somehow they all ended up in Fort Worth.

Bunny, we must have the same clock. I too have a small cube digital clock on my side of the bed. I don’t use it as an alarm clock anymore, but it was great when I was working, plus I like to see what time it is in the middle of the night. It also had a feature to select bird, rain, or a couple of other sounds instead of a loud alarm. It would get gradually louder, but was a gentle way to wake up.

Outside, yes, sounds like the same clock. It has this weird (to me) feature whereby you can project the time onto the wall, in case you prefer reading it that way. Not weird at all. :o

Sue, get out of here! Are you serious? How long ago, because I need that! I love the Art Deco look of it!

And your wallpaper ... ahhh. I just posted that recently as a suggestion for someone’s powder room. (I think. William Morris?) ❤️

I have one of these and have had for probably 20 years. It strikes the gong instead of an alarm...slowly at first then gradually builds so you can't ignore it. So much nicer than a buzzer. You can lower the lid and it's just a beautiful little box. eta: I just looked more closely at the site and they are all out of stock....not sure if they went out of business or ??

Oooh, Oly, that’s super cool, never seen one like it! My DH has a weird carved box obsession, he’d love this on his side. :D

(He used to do a lot of woodwork projects and made things like this.)

Bunny, that clock radio has been saved on my tablet as I've been trying to choose one to replace my old one that is getting finicky. Glad to know you like yours. My husband didn't think the sound quality would be very good, but it's mostly just npr and their occasional tiny desk concert.

Lisa, it’s not a high end sound system. I just tune into a local AM station for wake ups. Since I’m retired and a natural early riser, I only set the alarm a couple of times a week, just in case.

That white vintage clock is really cute!

Bedside clock would be my phone or iPod. I have a digital clock radio, but it's so darn bright, I wound up pulling the plug. Haven't needed an alarm for quite some time anyway.

If I had a regular analog clock bedside, I'd have to turn on a light to see it, and I hate doing that.

You are all pretty funny. I gave up on bedside clocks when my eyesight got bad enough that I needed glasses to read them. Now, I use an Echo Dot. When I need to know the time, I ask Alexa. I have reminders set for various times. I like reminders better than alarms because it is a voice that says whatever I've typed rather than an obnoxious sound.

The guest room has a small picture frame clock that runs on one battery. My father says he can hear it ticking, so I guess it's not a good choice for a bedroom. I don't have any other clocks in the house except the ones that are on the oven and microwave.

Arapaho, not only do I have mirrors as decor, I have a collection in the landing at the turn of my staircase. They reflect my feet coming down the stairs, or my face as I head up. At least once a week, I sing to myself “here she comes, walking down the stairs.“ (isn’t it incredible how a theme song from the late 60’s can be lodged, yet still accessible, in my brain? Where I put my keys? IDK. Theme song from childhood? Here ya go!)

My favorite is a moon beam llbean clock in a guest bedroom. So charming! And I have a silver PB pocketwatch style on my bedside table, clocks are important to me, I have a huge one in my kitchen and while bedside clocks may be obsolete for alarms, I do glance at them across the room all the time.

Arapaho and hh ... me, too! I love using mirrors in decor — the light they reflect, and depth they give an area. hh, I’m picturing you singing that song, looking at your feet. 😄

Bumble, I had to look up the moonbeam clock, love it! Hmm. I might have to get one of those ...

DH has a small cube alarm clock that he’s had forever. He pretty much sets it every morning to make sure he doesn’t oversleep. I am usually up with the cats but he stays in bed longer.

I used to have an alarm clock next to my bed until a couple of months ago when it died. I only need it for telling time as our cats are my alarm. I haven't been able to find one to replace it. The old one was too bright, so I'd put a black wash cloth over it. Talk about offending one's decor sensibilities! I'm using my cell phone right now and I hate it - I don't want to pick up my phone to check the time. I need dimmable and quiet (no ticking). I will be checking out some of the cool ones mentioned here!

I thought of you all this morning, around 4am ... I woke up and checked my phone for the time. My screen picture is The Rolling Stones tongue logo, and when I closed my eyes, I kept seeing the tongue for the longest time. 😁

Today I will be shopping for a clock for my nightstand.

@bluebell66 - Cubiewink is dimmable - three levels. Also no ticking 🙂
