Question about wildlife on the roof

Wasn't sure which forum to ask this of. We live in the woods and have tons of squirrels. I hear them during the day jumping on the roof from a tree, run across the roof and onto another tree. But sometimes I hear something jumping on the roof several hours after it's dark. DH insists it's a squirrel, but I have never seen squirrels after dark. I'm thinking a cat or a raccoon?? Any ideas?

Raccoons I'd expect to crawl up the side of the house. And go up there to sleep, something it seems would happen during the day.

Maybe get a ladder and look during the day, in case it is a raccoon and it has a latrine going up there. Because their poo is a human health hazard and shouldn't be left up there to maybe infect water coming out of the downspouts later (search racoon roundworm for background information).

Thanks Embothrium. Our house is just 1 story and we can see all of the roof from the ground and have never seen poop, fortunately.
