Adding tank water heater to existing tankless

I have a Navien 240A tankless water heater with re-circ. I am planning to add a hydronic baseboard space heater that is driven through a boiler that get heated by a solar heat collector. So I am thinking why not supply the 'cold' water line to the tankless from the hot water out line of the boiler. Since the incoming water is hot, the tankless should fire only if it needs to raise the water temperature further than it is set to. Is there anything wrong with this thinking? Is this how tankless water heaters function? What happens if the incoming water to the tankless is hotter than the tankless is set to? Does it just let the water pass through?
