To answer your questions, I don’t have any ruffled roses as of yet, unless my mystery rose ends up being ruffled. Based on the photos on here, though, I will be lucky if the mystery rose has such a lovely quality. My favorite photos on here are of Tiffany and Wild Blue Yonder. To my eyes, the ruffled quality looks best on the roses that aren't
absolutely packed to the brim with petals.

Sheila, thanks. Truly. I don't want to turn the conversations away from roses (something we all share a love for on here, which I appreciate) but in this case, I felt strongly. Sometimes we repeat words we hear or read without realizing what they mean, and I think if more people knew what that word really meant, they would choose not to use it. And I also realize that these conversations can be uncomfortable but the poster in question handled it with such grace and that is so so encouraging to see. And I'll drop it now so we can all get back to our common appreciation of beautiful roses 💛 😉

This ruffly rose popped up in my Instagram feed. I’ve never heard of this one before. It doesn’t look available in the US.

Wait, does any wavyness on the petal edge count as a ruffled rose? I'm looking at my DA order that's coming in April and now they all look ruffled to me but surely that can't be right 😅

noseometer....that is a pretty one. There are so many roses on Instagram that are gorgeous, but the poster doesn't include the name!

magpie....maybe ruffled-ness is in the eye of the beholder...hahahaha. In my case, I fully admit, I just love seeing pretty pictures of roses!

In my garden, the prize for most ruffles goes to 'Polka'. Not only is it super ruffly, but it blooms non stop and is a HUGE climber...so plenty of opportunity for lots of ruffles. In fact, I'm going out to give 'Polka' a very heavy prune today. Wish me luck!

James Galway has been one of my favorite roses with ruffles. Scentuous was new to me this past summer and is very ruffly as well. All that have been shared are wonderful!

Here is one Abraham Darby bloom this spring that was more ruffled than usual:

Lilac Rose seems to be quite enigmatic cultivar. What reports there are of it vary greatly with respect to colour and fragrance in particular. As far as I know, it was never very popular, or widely grown.

The image above was taken on June 10th two years ago at the Summerland Ornamental Gardens. I did not in fact know what cultivar this rose was when I first saw it in bloom and posted an image here on the forums for an ID. John_Ca was the one who identified it for me and he was quite certain of the ID. Others agreed.

So, on to the plant, or plants of Lilac Rose that we grow in the Gardens. We have several of this variety. It grows to a height of about 120 cms and is quite vigorous and shrubby. It blooms quite well and rebloom is satisfactory if not continuous. I have read reports of blooms failing to open properly on HMF and if my memory is correct, this is true to a degree in Summerland. They do not ball per say, but rather the petals are a bit limp in structure and they just do not always open as pertly as the ones in the image above. There is also some disagreement as to how fragrant this rose is, which I find interesting, because to my nose, it is extremely fragrant, potent most of the time. The colour is also quite variable, with more lilac tones in cooler weather and the glorious luminous pink as seen above when it is warm and sunny.

The English Roses in our collection are also all old plants, at least 25 years old if not slightly more. They are survivors who have weathered many years of benign neglect and are now responding to proper care.

So, I suspect that your mileage may vary as Jeri would say, depending on where you grow it. On the whole, English Roses do extremely well in the Okanagan Valley and when properly cared for, put on a real show. Thus I cannot comment on disease resistance, as we do not really have any disease issues here. That is about all I can tell you. But for myself, in this climate, it is a rose I like and am happy to grow,

I don't grow this rose, and I don't think we can get it in the USA. Nonetheless, the hybrid perpetual Madame de Renahy, a Guillot rose from the end of the 19th century, seems quite frilly and opulent. I'd like to grow it someday. @noseometer that's a rose bred by Takunori Kimura. Unfortunately we can't get his roses in the USA, but some of them are now available in Europe through Barni.

Another one I just thought of -- the Chestnut Rose, Rosa roxburghii. It is quite frilly, and the bush itself is very attractive. :)

! Yay! The chestnut Rose! I planted this fall 2019 and I'm so happy with its growth. Super vigorous and healthy and just plain pretty. I can't wait to see it this year. I made a boo-boo and deadheaded it. Don't even ask me why as I bought it for its hips! Just habit I guess.

Does Fimbriata count as "ruffled"? It's the only one I have that comes to mind as "ruffled," although I probably have others that I've simply never thought of in that way.

@Rosylady (PNW zone 8) - I bought Scentuous as a 3 gallon from Chamblees later in the summer and was very pleased with it - very fragrant and full ruffled cupped blooms. It repeated well through the fall. Time will tell how it does overall but I’m very happy with it. I only have one photo of it - not a good one and I wish I had taken one when it was fully open but it gives you an idea of what it looks like:

vaporvac....I love roses like the Chestnut rose! It's not one I've seen talked about as much...really nice foliage and flowers.

slumgullion....I would count Fimbriata as a ruffled rose...I love those petal edges!

sulty....your Bliss bloom is so pretty...definitely ruffly! What do you think of your Lilian Austin? I've only had it for a year, so it's still really small. When I get occasional blooms though, they are huge and stunning!

Rosie lady, the chestnut Rose was once known as 'Rosa microphylla Roxb. ex Lindl. synonym' and its leaves are tiny and adorable. It can grow quite large and gets a defoliating type bark with age. This is extremely attractive when combined with the large burr-like hips. It would look beautiful in your setting. Slumgullion, your fimbriata is so pretty. Reminds me of the Grootendorst family of roses.

I have the rose, just haven't ever taken pics of it....It is on a rather far-flung part of the property where I'm not walking by very often....And it's still a fairly young, gangly-looking plant...

I have a chestnut rose on order from RVR - have had my eye on it for years, am looking forward to growing it into a shade tree of sorts!

RosyLady, I love Lilian Austin. She came own root several yrs ago and I didn't expect much due to many Austins being very weak on their own roots in my soil and climate. She started blooming after the first year and I call her my Party Girl because her blooms are huge 3D powder puffs and are so cheery and ruffled. The color is Bubblegum pink with touches of clear yellow. I have never been able to capture just how beautiful her flowers are on camera. I do keep her in a pot. I have moved her around a bit over the yrs and she tolerates part sun although she doesnt bloom quite as much. Her leaves stay nice and green too, so that's a plus.

I love Lilian Austin! She is the big surprise in my garden, she always has blooms on her. I love how it changes from a salmon color to a light lavender at the end of her bloom.

Ohhh I wish my Lilian got lavender. She does get distinct lilac pink tones though so I can see how she could get the lavender tones. She's just so purrrty!

CeresMer...the rose pictured could very well be 'Eglantyne'. I have four of them in my garden and it's one of my favourite pink roses. I love Marta! I first saw her on YouTube....her garden is absolutely breathtaking...and I love her videos....so informative and inspiring.
