Expand garage into used area

I have a back stairwell in my house that must have some empty space underneath it - no current access. it backs up to my garage which is very tight with kids bikes and toys. I would like to cut access doors from garage into this empty space and put cubbies for my kids things. Anyone have experience doing this?
