Tile and backsplash

Hello! My project is going full force right now and the decisions are coming at me way too quickly!

I’m planning on a tile backsplash (tbd, thinking elongated hexagons or pickets). I’m going to look around to see what’s out there.

I was thinking to continue the tile up the window wall and onto the wall with shelves. Do you think that’s too much pattern?

    Sure. Why not?

@HillsideHouse Didn’t know if that much tile all around would be overkill or too busy.

I think the pattern looks great!

I think only you know if it's too much ;^) personally, I would not care for it. I prefer adding wall color for another dimension and texture.

Quick question! I feel like I’m leaning towards a white or light tile. Do I have to be really careful with choosing a white tile so that it’s a match to my quartz? A few tiles I leaned my quartz up against made my quartz look kinda yellow or dingy.

Guys, if I choose not to do the full window wall, how high up should I go? Because I can’t follow 18 inches (like under the cabinets) because my range hood will be sitting higher than that.

You only need a backsplash behind the cooktop and the sink.

Why do you feel you need to tile all the walls in the kitchen?

That seems excessive to me, in both design and cost.

Why not use that money to choose something else you like for the kitchen that is functional.

@loobab, I was thinking it would be visually nice not to stop and have it cover the whole wall making the ceilings appear taller and everything cohesive and not have that cut off line on the range hood wall.

If I don’t take it to the top of the range hood wall, would i then stop it right under the hood?

Correct me if I’m wrong..don’t those edging pieces I’d need cost a lot? When I was shopping around for my bathroom the edge pieces (which is need to stop the backsplash) can cost a lot more than the tile.

If you tile color coordinates with the paint color you will be fine.

Think of it this way, you don't need to wear a one piece jump suit to look taller.

You can wear a top and bottom in similar colors, even if they are different fabrics.

At the range hood, you can stop the tile where the hood starts to narrow.

After all, at the sink the tile won't go all the way to ceiling either.

Here’s a few contenders. Though that multiple color picket might be too visually busy than I was thinking.

This one is a little more simple colored picket, but it made my counter look a little muddy under the store lights.

Don't mix stone with faux stone--it'll make your counter look cheap. And hex usually belongs on the bathroom floor. Keep looking. You'll find the right one...

As far as edging, use Schluter trim.

Only the first one looks good with the other elements. But a lot of designers will tell you not to use two s different stones. All the others look off with your countertop. But remember, I’m only seeing it from a photo translated to my monitor. Keep looking.

Check out Tile Bar Montauk for backsplash

Will do! Thank you @rachel Nye!

I think you guys are right after looking at these samples. It’s really hard to match this white.

I was really wanting a marble backsplash, but I see what you’re all saying. Ugh. Now wondering if I should change my counters to a simple white so I can have that!

I do love this quartz though. It’s msi calacutta Verona if anyone has any suggestions for a good match. I’d prefer to stay in the $25 and under per square foot if possible.

I don’t think I want the backsplash to be colored. I’d prefer white, and more of a matte look, but definitely open to suggestions.

    Thanks!

Bought these and brought them home, before I read what you guys said about mixing stone. I am definitely going to wait until both cabinets and counters are installed before deciding for sure. But I wanted to have a few ideas because my contractors are moving fast and I might not have much time!

This quartz looks so yellow next to everything. It shows up even worse in photos!

I love my mystery white quartzite. We’ve had it over 2 years and eveb with a large family, it’s a workhorse. I think it will pair nicely with the Mantauk gin. (Dont mind the hideous travertine😂 it was put in to match the Santa Celia granite, then I had to change that and finally getting new backsplash).

Edited to add I will be using the 2x8 size but that is back ordered.

Hmmm, I see what you're saying about covering the entire walls. You don't really have a cutoff place because of windows and cabinets. I think it will look great if it isn't too costly. I also think you may have to consider a color. A very pale blue? (I don't know; I just like blue.) Here's one example I found; it's a lot of gray with your already gray cabinets but it looks like a "wall." If that makes sense. That is calacatta verona countertop in the photo.

I would tile the whole wall where the hood is and not the shelf wall. I just finished my remodel and am so happy with the result tiling all the way up the wall around the hood. Have you checked out Encore Ceramics? They have beautiful tile.

I’m still on Team Tile All the Walls.

I’m leaning towards doing the full window wall now. I just think it might look weird to stop it midway.

I’m leaning away from marble now, as many of you suggested it could clash.

Now I’m starting to panic though because everything makes this calacutta Verona look yellow and dingy!!!

Here’s at the store and then at home. What the heck! The cabinets and quartz aren’t in yet, but looking at it here I’m feeling like I’ll never find a white match!

Please tell me I’ll find a white??? Is there ever such a thing as not being able to find a good white compliment?

My husband would love the brick posted above. I was leaning towards a white shape rather than subway, but I suppose I could do subway if it’s my only option.

I looked up encore tile and like a few, but it also led me to another one I thought was nice..6th avenue. I saw this and it looks like a soft white! But I’m feeling let down because every time I think I have a match it’s not right. This is impossible!!!

Have you looked at this option:

    https://www.bedrosians.com/en/product/detail/cloe-tile/?itemNo=DECCLOWHI28G

It pulls a little too grey for my counters but I saw it on Pinterest and thought it looked lovely with a similar counter as yours.

@rachel Nye...that’s gorgeous!!! Love it!!! Totally the tones I’m going for!

You guys are the best! I was feeling so disheartened but some of your suggestions let me out in search of particular tiles in some local shops, and I think I found something that could work! This comes in picket or 8 inch subway. It has a variation of 5 milky whites that almost have a hint of gray. What do you think? This is the best match I’ve found so far I think.

I have a hard time envisioning, but on this wall we will have the curved range hood and the tile.

Will a variation of these 5 colors create a busy look? Or do you think they’re muted enough to be soft? Here is how they looked at the store.

I think it would not be to busy if you go with not contrasting grout.

Personally, I would definitely tile the walls all the way up, and I would NOT use white tile! You’ll never be happy with it. Maybe just peek at some patterned tile, either ceramic, which is less expensive, or cement. There are some colors that will make your counters and cabinets, very happy, to say nothing of...YOU!

Yes, I am a PRO....just use me favorite dog’s nickname here.

Okay! Definitely going to the ceiling!

Definitely planning on a non-contrasting grout! Is it true I should have it be a tiny bit different than the tile so you’ll see the distinction at least a little bit? Definitely not dark though! This was the grout color they had in the showroom. Would you guys go lighter than this to avoid it being too busy?

Here is at the store, and here is at my house.

Tile above is perfect with your counters and cabs. Use the grout they have on the sample board.

Mush pie...this tile is kinda like a milky grayish white. It comes with about 5 slightly varying tones. Though in this stock photo it’s looking MUCH more varied than it did at the store.

This was at the store near a natural light source. It hardly looked varied. And while it’s matte, I’m confused because the matte at the store had the slightest sheen while the samples they sent home are chalky. No sheen at all. Are you supposed to finish these with a top coat?

They look different on this wall! Can’t wait to see how they look in the daylight.

Love that you found something that made you happy! The colors look excellent! Can someone do a mock up with those to show you exactly how they will look on your wall?

    I think it’ll look great

I think they’re still looking pretty good in the daytime. I may go get a few more samples so I can see the color variation and more of how the pattern will look.

I couldn’t really find many inspiration images with these long skinny pickets. Would you guys suggest them vertically or horizontal? I was thinking vertical, but not sure if there’s a “best” way for this shape.

    Here’s the closest I found.

Could also do herringbone. They offer a 12x3 subway.

I think I’m leaning towards vertical pickets in the shades of milky white. But I’m open if anyone has insight or input. This is NOT my forte at all!!!

I vote vertical pickets in milky white shades. Looks great cloth counter and cabs.

You found it! Stop second guessing yourself - the milky white, verticle pickets are BEAUTIFUL! I would go with a non contrasting grout. Love it.

You got me!!! I’m SUCH a second guesser. You’re right, I should listen to my gut! Milky white pickets it is!!!

Don’t be surprised to see me with more questions about other things soon! Decisions are coming at me daily! I’m in the thick of this!!!
