Does backsplash clash with countertops?

last modified: 5 years ago

Hi! We recently redid our kitchen, and I'm worried the backsplash clashes with the countertops. I haven't asked any of my friends because I don't think they would give me an honest answer (afraid to insult me), so I'm turning to you guys! What do you think? Does it match or totally clash? I loved it at first, but now think it might look too busy. Thanks for your feedback!

Yep, you missed. And I'm no designer, so if it looks bad to me, it's pretty bad.

What a beautiful kitchen- really! Usually with a pattern counter, the backsplash is plainer. I would not have picked the 2, but as I look at it, I think it works. There is definitely harmony and nothing clashes in my eyes. ( I am not a designer either). The colors blend and do not clash, and I don't think it's too busy .

I will be curious to see others weigh in.

It wouldn't have been my first choice. The counter is the star, I would have done something

    simple.

Your gut is telling you the truth. While the colors of the splash and counter “match”, the combination of patterns doesn’t work. A simple, one color backsplash would be better.

I actually like it... so tired of seeing white subway tile with a white counter that happens to have some veins. That is not a bold countertop to me at all. You liked it enough to go for it!

Who cares what anyone thinks - do you like it? If you start listening to others too much, your voice can't be heard.

I had a client many years ago who wanted to do a very different backsplash. She found a place in California that made really interesting tiles. She ordered samples and starting coming up with a design. Everyone told her she was crazy. By the time I met her, she was ready to throw in the towel. I simply asked her if she loved it. She did, so I told her just go for it. Most people will not like it, but this really is the perfect backsplash for her!

Live with it. You didn't say how recent it was that you did your kitchen. If after a while you aren't feeling it then look into changing it.

    Hang in there

Well the counter is a simple black counter - if it had been a "busy" counter, it wouldn't have worked.

    I think it looks fine.

ETA: BTW, I like that you tiled above the window -- I'm not a fan of chopping window areas in half, I think that was a good choice you made.

You know, these really are words of wisdom...

It's definitely not bad at all. It's weird though - i'm looking at the photo for 15 seconds and for a few seconds i think it looks quite lovely, then i wonder if maybe there is something "off" to it, then back to thinking it is lovely. I legitimately can't decide if it is "tolerable" versus quite nice!

I do not think the colors clash. I think the back splash gives off an informal/casual vibe and the counter a more high end feel. I am sorry you are over the moon happy. That was a lot of work/worry and money!!

Again, it's fine, but could look better. You decide what you want to do.

Question - just out of curiosity. Did you bring sample of tiles home and see what they

looked like with your counter, your cupboards, your lighting????????????????

And stood back and took a look?????

Thank you, Debbie for your kind answer and encouraging words! That is a very good point about not caring what others think! And you're right, mxk3--I definitely should take those wise words to heart!

Angel, I did bring home samples to see if they went well together, and I loved it at first. We did the renovation about two years ago, and it wasn't until about a week ago that I started questioning the combination.

It's fine! It's a little different is all.

Not the best combo, but not hideous.

My first thought when I saw it was I like it. It has texture and is different it also adds warmth to your kitchen.

I think that since you have lived with this for two years, wait another three. Get your money’s worth out if this one.

I agree that the busyness is what makes it seem not quite right. Your eyes need a place to rest.

In person and photos sometimes are very different. You have loved it for 2 years so it

probably looks better in "real life" than in a photo.
