Can you take a picture from further away, so we can see what is to the sides of the sink?

if the other flanking cabinets are standard 24 in depth...but the sink cabinet was either pulled forward or is actually a deeper cabinet you can readjust things at the time of this project. Sink base cabinet can be pushed back in line if it is standard depth so no more corners there at the sink. If you need a new 24 in deep standard sink base it is not that difficult. It is the most basic cabinet of all. The doors could perhaps could be used w some carpentry adjustment. So you are painting first? go ahead and do so. If you then have a pause in the work before counter sink and faucet you'll have time to figure out options when that top comes off. Need a New cabinet? then that can be painted...re use this cabinet? it will already be painted so just adjust things.

...toddlers are toddlers for only a blink of an eye. Unless you are planning on having another 3 kids, I would not hold back on a better looking design because of these few clumsy and accident prone years ;) They will find corners somewhere else, guaranteed.
