Have you thought about wall-to-wall carpeting? I like the navy with your choice of paint, chairs, etc., but, considering the size of your room and the layout, a rug (or rugs) of any size will chop up the space even more. We have wood floors throughout and don’t use a rug in our small master bedroom for the same reason. One question: Where does the archway lead? Really a charming room!

Hi Nancy! I’ve thought about that, but I love wood floors too! Maybe a custom rug that mimics the odd shape of the room but leaves a little bit of wood floor along borders? The arch doorway leads to walkin master closet.

With odd shaped rooms, I always pick out carpeting and have it cut and bound to the shape of the room. I usually go 6 inches off the walls to show the hardwood floors.

I included some photos in daylight. What do you all think about a colored rug (something with rust & blue) vs a light neutral rug? I guess my question is will a darker, bolder rug make the room look smaller versus a neutral light colored rug?

I have a quirky little cape cod as well. Where you are placing a table and chairs I have a fireplace and bookcases, which I love but they do eat up the space. From what I can tell it looks like your going with navy blue and white. I’m not really a blue person but that’s what I ended up with in the master bedroom. We used a 8x10 area rug under the bed about 8 to inches away from the baseboard, and just enough on either side for feet on a cold morning. I think your room will turn out lovely.

I personally don’t like dog leg shaped rugs and prefer the first rug layout which keeps the most wood floor visible. And with that layout I’d do the middle scheme rug as the dark blue seems too bold and the medallion not right being completely cut off with the bed covering it. The middle rug works fine as ‘background’.

I’d start with that and the. See if you’d like a smaller accent rug by the lounge chairs which paired with the really plain rug could be something with more pattern (like the medallion option but sized smaller). But wait and see it all together before you decide if it needs it.

All great suggestions! Would it be ok that the rug jets outs all the way past the door frame? I added a photo so you can see what I mean. That would be an 8x10 rug. Keep in mind the bed stops right at the beginning of the door frame, so I figure some rug has to show at the foot of the bed otherwise it looks strange...
