Pantry with pocket door is worth it.

Hello everyone,

I would like to hear your comments on a small pantry we would like to add to our kitchen ( if space permits). It would only store, can, bags of produce ( potatoes , etc) and small appliances (mixer, blender, instant pot).

My DH likes the corner pantry, and I am concerned it would take too much space ( that we don't have already). I agree with him that pantry will probably be cheaper than kitchen cabinets. So I was wondering if a corner pantry - 2ft x 4ft with pocket door would do the trick and work out well.

This will be a new build ( haven't finished the floor plan yet LOL) Our kitchen will be 12 ft x 12 ft. with an island ( ~4 or 5ft x 3 ft wide).

The picture is from the internet and it doesn't have a pocket door so it would be similar to it. We would not have this stack oven.

I thinking of 2ft deep is to keep the same depth as the counter top.

This is one I did years ago similar to what you are describing but it is something like 4' x 6' (we combined two back to back 24" deep closets) If you are only in the planning stages plan a better design- either build a useable pantry in the corner or eliminate the corner from the kitchen completely and use it as storage space in an adjacent space.

See in this kitchen the area to the right of the stove/ left of the tall pantry cabinet? Instead of shoe horning a cabinet in here we created a closet that faced the adjacent room.

If your kitchen measures only 12 x 12, I can't see how you'll have adequate walk space around an island. Can you take a photo showing all doorways, windows, etc ?

If you install a pocket door to a pantry, keep in mind the amount of use this door will receive. Pocket doors can be very costly, and better ones are heavier. You'll need expert installation for that project. You need to research specific costs and consult a kitchen design professional before proceeding. I'd personally opt for another layout.

I have pocket doors to my pantry. The depth required for the pocket door hardware is 4"...wonder if that changes your opinion on how much shelving you can really fit? My pantry measures 4'x8' inside. But yes, I love a pantry with pocket doors, hope you can make it work!

How can you even access the corner? You can’t stand in it to reach anything?

I was not thinking of standing in it it would work as a cabinet.

We don't have a floor plan yet, we are still reviewing to ensure we have enough space etc. We are considering 4ft between island and countertop and as it will be a open concept the sitting goes to the living room.

I will check with the designer if 4 x 8 or 4 x4ft would fit, I am afraid it will not as ceilsan32 mentioned.

I think you'll see that having even a 4' island will require a kitchen length of at least 14', to insure adequate walking/passing space.

Thanks for the pictures, I am a little fit confused, sorry.. the first picture where it is what I was thinking, it seems the pantry is less deep that the fridge, so I am thinking it should be less than 4 ft. Did you fit the fridge partially in the pantry?

The back of the fridge is recessed about twelve inches into that wall (good eye, i had forgotten that clever detail!) It’s a counter depth fridge and the base cabinets on that wall were 12” deep so it was recessed about 12”. The pantry was still made from two back to back 24” closets though...

You might consider bi fold doors instead. The problem with any niche you cannot wipe off is that kitchens need the frying grease mist cleaned from surfaces regularly for safety reasons not just the way it looks and unless you can prevent that mist from getting into the "pocket", it could also smell.

If you're trying to put an island in a small kitchen, make sure it is a small stand alone cabinet -- something you can roll into the room and out of it as needed -- and with rounded corners. On the plus side, doing that lets you use your island for dining/entertaining on a porch or deck or patio.
