What is this siding material? Is it suitable for outdoor use, or do you need a large overhang?

    The siding on the wall is cedar which is great for exterior use. The soffit overhead is fir which can also be used outside if finished and maintained correctly.

    How to maintain the Fir soffits as you mentioned they need to be? Recoated and how often?

    I can't say for sure. Soffits are obviously exposed to less sun and water than vertical surfaces. I expect recoatings to be infrequent.
