seed-ID, weed in rye
hi there
so I got some winter rye (Secale cereale) as green manure, I sowed in it fall, everythings fine.
but the bag with the leftover seed was left in our garden hut,
and mice got into it, they munched a tiny hole into the side and ate all the rye, leaving those weed seeds.
sorry, no better pic available, I just hope that it is something typicall. I got the seeds from an organic seed shop/ farmers cooperation.
and if you look closely there are bits of seed pods that are "pearls-on-a-string"-like, 2 or 3 together, probably more.
I was in a hurry and was not to keen to sow an unknown weed and watch it grow into you-know-what.

well, I discovered the pic while sorting things
the actual year was 2015/2016.
I did use Sinapsis alba or Phacelia before, never this overwintering thingy.
it was quite an adventure, I was dead set on getting the "real McCoy", so old "heritage cultivar", 6-7 feet high, I knew this German organic gardeners cooperation-onlineshop who collect old cultivars and breed new ones who had it in stock.
at work (landscape architect) I was dealing with a farmer-for-hire who did all the ploughing and seeding for a recultivation project, and I quizzed this guy about the green manures and he assured me that it would be ok to sow as late as end of November.
so, I leveled the area (a totally neglected allotment we had been working on for 1 1/2 years) and scratched around on the surface and raked criss cross and everything.
My plan was to revive the soil after several months under black plastic sheets and at the same time get the workload in early spring down.
so, yes a success, the soil turned out lovelythe rye was a beast, it was amazing, this is in an alottment, and all sorts of people dropped by or commented on the freakishly tall rye, my old Italian neighbor tried to tell me that they used similar stuff way back when at home for thatching...

the farmer-for-hire was totally right a bout the timing, but I didn't take into consideration that I don't own tractors and all those machinery like him, so I realized that action was needed when the stalks developed.
I mowed it several times to gain time and let one bit "go to seed", but later on I never found rye volunteers...
this is roughly from mid March till late May
I started digging the soil, preparing a Dahlia patch
he is 8y old at that time, the rye grew taller than me (am 6feet)
