Update backsplash possible?

Without replacing the surrounding travertine backsplash, how could I update and remove this framed mural? Could it be chiseled out and new tiles inserted? What would work with the existing backsplash that has to stay?

IMO remove it. Anything you replace it with will just still be a silly piece behind a cooktop. From what I can see that backsplash doesn’t even work with the counter so time for a change.

Remove the entire backsplash? Here is a better shot of the granite against the backsplash. Suggestions for what would work with it? Thank you.

Can we see a full shot of the kitchen? Your cabinets are as important as your countertop when considering a new backsplash.

    Silestone counter in foreground

The rest of the splash works fine as far as I can tell. I don’t know if I’d remove the one part until I was ready to remove the whole thing though.

If you can find a tile that complements the rest of the backsplash in thickness, you can change that area to be more subtle. Your current backsplash is pretty great with the kitchen and that square just stands out (not in a good way). Look for plain tiles in a simple shape to fill in that area.

Yes, but wouldn't have to be rough textured like the travertine?

At the end of the day you still have an accent over the range. That’s the real question you have to ask yourself - if you even like that look at all or would prefer a more cohesive streamlined (one material throughout) look. People usually fall into one of either camp so which one are you personally in?

Not a pro!! In fact I have been helped here many times. Is there any chance if you were going to try to replace it anyway, that you could try to paint those tiles or have them painted? I know I have seen something like that on this forum before.

I actually like the backsplash. I never thought about painting it. Would something like a herringbone pattern in travertine inside that frame look okay?

Not a pro but I wouldn’t introduce more pattern. I think backsplash is fine. Sometimes on here people do stainless backsplash behind their cooktop. Not sure if (how) you could do that. I had a tile design behind my cooktop in my last house, but when I built new, I was advised to keep it simple as that will be the first thing to date the kitchen.

You could do a much smaller travertine brick layout. If the scale of the travertine in the center is decidedly different - even if the shade is slightly off - it should look fine. Keep the pencil liner as is.

Now you just have to hire an archeologist tiler to do precision work :)

Grind down the raised trim piece and add a copper backsplash behind the stove-it will age over time and look lovely
