“Not a lot of room on each side for curtains to hang when pulled open.” That’s a non-issue for me. If a foot or so of the windows on each side is still covered, I wouldn’t care.

Is that a rural road or street just outside the window? Or maybe your driveway? Trying to get a feel for privacy needs . . .

For the style of your room, I’d do some sort of shade (lined for nighttime privacy) and curtains.

I like a dark room and we needed privacy so I used a translucent shade for the window that I can leave down during the day and have sunlight shine through. I added a fabric Roman shade with blackout lining for night time. I really like the look and the pleated shade can hide behind some folds of the Roman shade for a clean open window look. I mounted my Roman shade near the ceiling as an outside mount and my blind inside the window frame.

If I do hang curtains on each side and want to pull them for black out, considering the width of the window, how wide should the curtains be? And wouldn't that create to much bulk on each side of the window when the curtains are pulled open?

You want coverage when fully closed, obviously, but also enough material that they aren’t hanging flat, like a sheet.

I don’t think they’d be too bulky when pulled open, depending on material. I think they’d really frame the window and wall nicely, but it’s really just personal preference. You might want a cleaner look with just a shade and/or other treatment.
