Pretending it's spring while looking out at the snow...

Just repotted my Ban Ngong Ngoy (glad I don't have to try and pronounce that) and, after I finished, discovered a tiny peduncle starting out. Hope it continues to develop, in spite of my manhandling the plant.

i really like that container and the trellis - it looks great! I also like Kermit too!

Your area looks so neat and well kept - my area looks like a jungle! Only thing I seem to be missing are the monkeys!

That looks fantastic. What's the substrate? It certainly is impressive. Best of luck with Mr Peduncle.

Thanks, Bill. I printed the pot on our 3d printer, and the trellis is made from some metal supports for tunnels to protect veggie plants from frost (https://www.gardeners.com/buy/super-hoops/8609749.html#start=7)

I haven't used them for a number of years, so I flattened them back out and gave them new life as a Hoya trellis. The substrate is a mix of coco chips, bark, coir, and perlite.

As for neatness... just don't look at the spilled pumice and bark bits lurking around, lol! I do have room for more Hoyas, though... can't wait for the weather to warm up!

I think we all do this at one point or another. I'm feeling the same way with my multiflora budding up (should be any day now). I had Ban Ngong Ngnoy at one time and did really well. I think I let it get too dry because it shriveled up and went kaput. Even had a peduncle it formed over the summer, too. :/. Darn it, I need a greenhouse or sun porch!

Wendy - 3D printing huh? Impressive. I've always wanted to dabble in it but never tried. My granddaughter, who is in her second year of college, did a 3D print for me while a senior in HS. She printed one of my military emblems. It was impressive then so now, three plus years later I'm sure the technology has advanced tremendously.

I think the pot looks great. You can literally design whatever you envision, right down to the hole sizes and placements. How long does it take to print and how expensive is it to purchase the material it deposits?

I'm thinking you may have a future in custom printed pots! Now if only we could 3D print live hoyas.....

Bill, it's actually my son's printer, but, since he's been living with us I've been using it a lot for pots. I love being able to specify size and shape (round or rectangular), how much of a slant, however many holes I want (or none at all), and the what size the holes should be.

That particular pot took about 13.5 hours to print and is printed out of proto-pasta magnetic iron PLA, which is about the priciest filament I've used, but I love how it looks, and it eventually rusts some, which makes it that much more interesting. For most of the pots I've printed, I've used less expensive petg filament.

    Here's one that's rusted

And here's a skull pot I printed using that same filament. It hasn't spent any time outside in the rain, and hasn't rusted yet.

I do fine with setting up the pot file, slicing for the printer, loading and changing filament, and getting it all started. For changing the nozzle or any printer problems I call for my son :-)

Now what I want is a printer that can handle pots larger than about 8" in diameter.

That is fantastic - now you have me thinking! Damn....

Wow I am super-impressed with your 3D printing! That is amazing. Your Ban Ngong Ngoy is huge. How long have you had it? I'm sure I'll need one of those now too. Haha.

My hoya wishlist definitely exceeds my space limitations. The other day, I made the mistake of exploring AH Hoyas. I have said up and down that I will not import. But looking on that site is wearing down my resolve. So many goodies!

Also, i did just purchase an imported plant from Ecuagenera and it was a great price and it's a good looking plant. So I have already broken my promise. Hoyas may be next!

Thanks, popmama. I got my Ban Ngong Ngoy from Logee's in September '19. It was small, but a well established plant, not just a rooted cutting. It's been a really vigorous grower for me, not fussy at all. It hasn't flowered for me yet. When I brought it back inside last September (after its summer vacation outside) it had a couple of peduncles started, but they just stalled out and never developed after it was brought in. I think the drop in humidity from outside to in was just too much of a shock for it. This winter it's been sitting right next to a humidifier and I think it likes it :-)

I have been looking at AH Hoyas site, and am very tempted! I do have one Hoya (pachyclada albomarginata) that I got via ebay from someone in Thailand. Do you have to order from AH through Facebook? I'd really rather avoid Facebook, but I may just have to make an account.

I sure hope you don't have to order through Facebook because I don't do Facebook. Period.

From what I gathered on their website, you can email orders to them and they will respond with availability and shipping cost. At least, that's how I read it. But I am not sure. I know someone that I met through Reddit that is planning to place an order. So I'm sort of waiting for her to tell me how it worked.

I tried searching on youtube for "how to order from ah hoyas". Unfortunately I just found some unboxing videos. One of them got me even more excited. But they did mention Facebook and never mentioned any of the pricing (disappointing!).

I wish I had more details! I did download their spreadsheet of hoyas and went through the whole list and highlighted my 'maybes' in yellow and my 'favorites' in green.

P.S. I cannot believe that hoya is not even 18 months old. I have some I've had way longer than that and not even close to that amount of growth. Congratulations!

    sunfleurpower, thanks, and welcome!

Popmama, it has been a vigorous grower, now just waiting for flowers! When I think of it, all the Hoyas I've gotten from Logee's have been good growers.

I think I'm just going to have to email AH Hoya at some point and find out. Their website says to email, but also has a link for US contact that takes you to facebook. I sure hope that I don't need to go through facebook to order. If you find out anything, let me know :-)

Wendy, what the heck? I wish I knew what those printers were and how to use them!! I'll have to ask my nephew. beautiful and no need for artificial lights too) I'll bet you LOVE the sunny days when the sun reaches throughout that whole room.

I saw a Hoys just like that at Mahonies here in Winchester and it has buds every where, mealy too((( I almost bought it until I saw those!!!

The mealies at this time of year, finishing up a lobby dreary winter indoors, have returned with a vengeance! I can wait to get everything outside on a warm day and spray the snot out of 'em. Mealies drive me nuts.

Thanks chuy and Mike, It's fun when one hobby leads to learning about another. The printer I use is my son's Prusa MK3, which came in parts and he assembled and calibrated. No way I could have done that. My 3d printing knowledge is extremely rudimentary, just enough to print my pots and some other things that I've gotten files for off of thingiverse. Oh, I did do a pot that I designed using sculptris; here's a pic of it...

    front

    and back

Haven't been able to decide what to put in it. Hmmm... maybe a small Hoya like serpens or curtisii?

Yup same here Wendy. Stunning. You are going to have the most unusual pouts al over the place soon. Let me know when you want to sell me one. Ha.

Don't laugh. I went to Mahoney's and got that Hoya and here is the funny thing. Two workers there saw me grab it and wondered if there was anymore.lol They searched in vain for others already in bud!! I took the only one) Sitting with me here at work until I bring it home. Small yet already budding out. The perfect size. Now if I could make the perfect pot!!

Oh, I can see that pot looking like a Medusa with a crazy plant as hair)

    Bill. I HATE those bugs!!!

I drown them never to return again. I use a 30 gallon barrel filled half way with warm water with rosemary natural soap for 20 minutes and whalla, gone for good!!!

Mike - they're winning! This month, February, and March are the two most critical ones for me. The plants have used up all their energy and vigor from summering outside, and now they are beginning to feel the effects of indoor growing. My humidity is 23% - I've done everything possible to raise it and it never exceeds 32%! The days are dark and dreary and the mealies seem to take advantage of these conditions.

You say you submerge the entire plant in a solution of water and rosemary soap? I wonder if I made a concoction of neem oil along with water and a little dish washing liquid and submerged them if that would work. I just need warmer weather before attempting it. I also neem to make sure none of those little suckers are wearing scuba equipment - they're very clever you know!

I can't begin to tell you how much they are hated.

Happy Hump Day All! Catching up from a few days ago. I'm not sure if there's special formatting to quote a prior post, so excuse my ignorance.

This is correct! I placed my order with AH a few days ago and now I'm anxiously waiting for it to be shipped, lead time was 6-8 weeks to ship at the time of order... it sounds so far away but considering this approaching deep freeze, I'm hoping that my package will arrive in a sweet spot of not to cold in early April. You don't need a Facebook account to make an order, but after your order is placed, they invite you to join the FB group where they seem to post updates on which orders are going out currently and pictures of the plants with roots wrapped and ready. I hadn't been on FB in a while except to soothe this new hoya obsession by consuming any and all content available.

I'll definitely post once the package arrives. Wish me luck!

Thanks Mike, so glad you went back for that Hoya :-)

Bill, I hate mealies. For them I bring out the big guns (imidicloprid). They're just so hard to get rid of.

Sunfleurpower, thanks for the info on ordering from AH Hoya. I did email them asking about ordering for delivery later in the spring when the weather's warmer, and they emailed back saying it was too early to order now, and to contact them again in the end of March, early April. If the lead time is 6-8 weeks, I think I can order sooner to and hope for decent early April weather. What zone are you in?

    Happy Sunday All!

SLD, I'm in zone 5b. I did ask AH to hold off on shipping till the first week of May, we has some negative degree weather and a couple of wild snow storms that dumped way more than the forecasts said they would and I freaked out. Crossing my fingers that nature behaves by that point...
