I started growing plants indoors under lights many years ago, when T8 fluorescent lights were current technology, so I am still using those. They still work, and they are paid for.

I live in California, so my light is only used for a few months in the winter to start vegetables and some flowers. I found an ordinary LED shoplight to work quite well. Since it doesn't give off heat, I can adjust it to hang very close to the plants.

I used T8's for ages... this year I upgraded to LED grow light. Kind of nice. I Can choose blue, blue/red, or red light, and it's a good size to get a couple flats under. They don't get hot, and they don't shatter, lol. Menards had them on sale a while back.
