Basically, neutral color or colors that come in different materials and textures, some sleeker, some nubbier..they all will reflect light differently, giving you a layered, rich effect, instead of being just one note, flat white or beige or (insert another neutral)

So you can have a shower curtain (say linen, or white with embroidery as what you've got now, or cotton with some accent, or waffle weave), and a bath mat /small rug, and maybe grasscloth or wicker basket, and handthrown clay mug for a holder? and towels ..samey colors, but great allover effect, because each thing brings yet another texture with it.

I like Anthropologie for shower curtains, but right now I looked-and they don't have many examples that would be right for the bathroom I think. they do have a waffle weave though

Aprilneverends thank you for doing all this research for me. I really like the Topanga shower curtain. It has such a soft, flowy look to it. Ok, I won’t paint the vanity but will change the handles. The distance from your front edge to the beginning of the bowl cutout should be as small as possible. If you have a 1 1/2" cabinet overhang that dimension could be as small as 3 1/4", not the 6" fat boy you've pictured. If you rabbet the cabinet front to accommodate the sink flange, it could be as small as 2 5/8". I've made 2 3/8" front rails on kitchen sinks several times.

Make the bowl catch the splash, not the top, please.

Here is a photo of my interior bathroom with the solar daylighting tube. There are no other lights on in this bathroom and it would be pitch black otherwise. @flygirl That is fantastic! What a great idea. I don’t know how many feet are above our bathroom. That is something I might look into once we move in. I never heard of solar daylighting tubes. Serves the same purpose as skylights I suppose? I would prefer this to skylights. Thank you for posting. I can see why you love it.

Can anyone suggest a great white neutral color that could go in almost any exposure for an open concept home? I’m leaning towards BM Simply White for hallway, kitchen and family room, with BM Cloud White for trim. I know a lot depends on exposure, flooring and furniture. My exposure is southern and I have white cabinetry with dark wood flooring. I’m leaning to Simply White, hoping this will look best with these components. Ideas, suggestions, advice is greatly appreciated. You have all given me the best advice to make me believe the guest bathroom won’t look as bad as I had envisioned, so I’m again seeking your advice.

First off let me say your new space is going to be beautiful. secondly l, I hope you get the help you need re the white paint but I am not the girl to do it. I buy gallons and gallons of paint generally as a mistint in the colour range I want and just custom colour it myself as I need it. I think simply white and cloud white are both beautiful and I have used cloud white for my trim in the past and liked it very much. . I also meant to tell you that I got off track with the whole solar tube discussion and wanted to say that I have the same granite you have in your bathroom in my whole kitchen. since I couldn't change the granite I painted over my entire golden oak kitchen, which is in the photo below, in benajmin moore silver fox cut with white . It reads as white but has the same taupey pink undertones as are in the granite.

@flygirl519 Thank you. At least I know your opinion of Simply White and Cloud White. As for the granite. Take a look at "our granite" in this photo. It looks amazing. It needs the right touch of paint and accessories as you have all suggested to me. You have no idea how much I appreciate it. As I said, moving day is coming and in my head I'm looking at a lot of physical work ahead besides decision making. You did a beautiful job with the granite. It's amazing what simple changes can do to make it look spectacular!

@flygirl I would prefer not to keep it. If we remove it now there will of course be a hole in the wall. This is something hubby will most likely do down the road but not right away. Too many other things to do once we move in. The builder won’t remove it. The mirror was an easy task for them to remove, so they did it for us. For now, we will put up with it. Glad we saw this and stopped them from installing it in our master bath 🤦‍♀️

Hi again. If it were me I too would remove the medicine chest. Its kind if in a bit of an odd place to the left of the vanity. If that removal is pending in the shorter term I would ignore that its there and buy a beautiful oval mirror for above the sink. Something with a little bit of glamour to amp up the beauty factor in that room. And be sure it allows you to open up your medicine cabinet door. Not sure which way that swings or how close it is but you should measure the swing to be sure a mirror above your sink will fit there.

Do you love the back splash around the granite? If not it is easily ( usually) removed and gives you more counter space on a relatively small vanity top.

flygirl519 I agree with everything you said. Until looking at homes for sale in NJ, I never saw medicine cabinets to the left of a vanity. I thought it was redundant, not to mention unattractive. We’ll have to figure out what to do there. As for the backsplash, that is an idea too. Didn’t think of that. If you have any thoughts on mirror styles, please send them my way. The medicine cabinet opens from the right side.

Heres a couple but really it depends on your taste and budget. The darker one would coordinate with the vanity and the silver one with the taps etc. my vote would be darker but again personal taste

My only advice is to make it a good sized mirror that fills the space above the vanity substantially.
And I would not do square or rectangular. I think with your vanity shape and size a square or rectangular one would just make the whole area look like one tall column.

Its so funny that were talking about your hubby removing that recessed medicine chest. I am doing exactly that for a family member next week and drywalling it in. Its not a hard job but we are in emergency order lockdown here in Ontario since Christmas due to covid. So I cant buy drywall easily until they lift it, hopefully next week. I remember putting that cabinet in for her maybe 15 years ago and put a time capsule behind it with a few of her young kids things.. It will be fun to open it up.

Lizzie, consider painting the wall a dark, striking color. This is B.M. Brewster Gray. and I see it (or something like it, you would have to be the judge) in the granite. It will be fab with the cabinet. I’m a believer in when you have to turn on lights every time you enter the room, the wall color should be bold.

A silver framed mirror, to compliment the faucet; off white towels and shower curtain on a silver rod , and these 4 watercolors, from etsy for $46.00, on the wall, will, IMO, be make a lovely bath.

Not a bathroom, but I love the color with off white and wood.

@JudyG Designs I love it! I was thinking of going with a bold color like graphite, but I just love what you chose. You have no idea how helpful this is for me. I’m going to look through the tons of paint color brochures of BM I have right now for Brewster Gray!

Good Morning @JudyG Designs. Yes, like the above photo. I think you suggested BM Silver Lake for above the wainscoting in my dining room. It seems grays are easier to choose, but I love navy's like Hale Navy, Van Deusen Blue, Newburyport Blue, and Gentlemans Gray. I just don't know whether that would be a good choice for an open concept home. I still am not sure what whites/off whites to choose in the open area. I like Alabaster, Simply White, Chantilly Lace, Cloud White, Cottonballs, and others. So confusing. I have to know by 2/24.Here is a photo of my previous living room/dining room. We are keeping all this furniture. The drapes and rug will be changed and we will not be using the recliner shown here. As much as I love the chandelier here, I like the chandelier shown in your photo. I would like to use my chandelier somewhere and considered possibly the family room. your home will be beautiful Lizzie. Im sure you have done this but I googled " best white for hale navy" and best white for van deusen blue and the winner by folks who know more than me was white dove.

@flygirl519 Believe it or not I haven't googled that. I've been on so many blogs of interior design, I've looked at so many colors on BM's website and SW's website, have so many color swatches and even bought and painted sample colors on sheet rock. White Dove is very popular. My good friend has that throughout her home. The thing about it is that it can look dingy in certain lighting. I guess I just feel overwhelmed and I don't want to make a mistake because I don't know when this whole house will ever be painted again. It has 10' and 12' ceilings and hubby is going to get a break because we hired someone to do it. In the past he always did it, but things change as we get older. I'll check out googling the navy's and whites. Thank you for your post, I appreciate it.

Lizzie--may I ask how big your family is? Will anyone be regularly using this bathroom, or is it basically a guest bath? I ask because you may actually need a medicine cabinet. You can get a big beautiful oval mirror which is the door to a recessed medicine cabinet. It doesn't protrude from the wall, just looks like a mirror. Then you have a place for Band-Aids, eye drops, hand cream--things you might use during the day, even if this not someone's "bathroom".

What color will the builder put on the walls? I think your shower curtain is lovely. I would put it up, hand a simple mirror, and live with the whole thing while you move in. Focus on the rest of your projects. Your house is lovely . Good luck!

@ junco East Georgia zone 8a. Thank you! This will be a guest bathroom. This home is for my husband and I. The builder painted it, but we hired a painter to repaint the whole house with colors we have to decide on. For now we'll keep that protruding medicine cabinet but eventually we'll remove it.

This is very similar to what we just chose for our Master bath. Here is a photo of the samples including the floor (tile color in middle between granite and cabinet) and the paint will be Dover white. We will also have Matte black fixtures. I hope we are not dissapointed! Also will take any decorating tips. IE...towel colors?

@meaux61 I think your baths will look beautiful. I like your choices. I don't think your granite is as busy as mine is. I also like the idea of adding matte black fixtures. I gave that a thought, but for now I leave as is. With new homes there are so many needed items like window treatments, lighting and furniture. Good luck to you!

Hi Lizzie. I think the pictures would look lovely. My personal choice would be either two above the towel rack side by side or if you have tall narrow unadorned wall in your bathroom, stack the three vertically. As well, with the bright white frames, if you hang above the rack I think a white towel would be a good choice. Nice and clean looking and the wall paint would be a nice contrast.

My personal choice would be the 2 yellow ones. The blue is very pretty but the two yellow ones seem, at least on my monitor, to coordinate more with your shower curtain

Hi there. I think your bathroom looks very nice. But I don't know about the shower curtain. The curtain itself is quite pretty but on my screen it doesn't seem to really stand out against the walls, which again, on my screen show up as kind of a pale aqua. what about something that brings in the paint colour. for example this one from wayfair looks like it might coordinate with both wall colour and flooring and bring a little pizzazz .
