You obviously never cook. Heat degrades anything you might put there. Grease accumulates on anything in the way between the range and the hood. There IS a hood, right?

Hmmm....I have a back guard with high shelf. Inside the hood gets to be a greasy mess but not the shelf.

Stainless. Go to a restaurant supply wholesaler or have one custom made.

Why would you want a shelf there? Unless it’s one of those warming shelf things like restaurants use?

Why do you want this? Will it be for a warming shelf, or for what purpose?

IDK what your particular reason is for a shelf, but if you're trying to get away from the look of a range hood, have you seen Zephyr, pull-out range hoods. I love mine!

I recently met someone who was burned after someone painted her hood with "high temp" paint and it went up in flames. Don't recommend. Stainless or bust. And only keep heat/grease compatible things there (tea kettle, stainless lids, and hot pads sit on mine at almost all times).

Why does no one balk at cabinets above a range, but a shelf (installed below the range hood) sends everyone into a tizzy. As long as it’s non combustible and you wipe it down often, I don’t see the big problem?

@Sissyphus Range hoods do have variation in clearance requirements. The one I have now is 26” to 36”. I hear what you’re saying, but…restaurants see a level of use that home kitchens do not. My old range had a back guard on it. I never found the grease on that difficult to clean. I find it difficult to imagine why something set about 26” from the cooktop would get so covered in grease. I guess depends what you’re cooking! And how often you clean…

Personally I think the only item that should be over a range, is a hood.
