Question about noise in wall cavities from neighbour BELOW.

From my neighbour below there is quite a lot of speech/TV noise coming up through the floor, but also some noise the wall cavities (from the same underneath neighbour). The walls are brick.

Is the wall cavity noise likely to be coming off my floor and into the walls, or is this a case of the underneath neighbour's noise travelling directly into his wall cavities then moving upwards within the walls? Would soundproofing the floor (acoustic mineral wool, boards/mats) be likely to have any impact on the wall cavity noise?

As I say, most of the noise is coming directly through the floor anyway. Thanks in advance for any answers.

Is this a multifamily dwelling (apartment style condo??) or is this a family home with two suites?

I'm sorry to say but the best options are from down below. Start at the source. Since that isn't an option, you can install a 1/2" cork floating floor with 6mm or 12mm cork underlayment.

The 1/2" cork underlay adds 22 dB of noise reduction (airborne noise). The 1/2" cork floating floor adds another 12 dB of noise reduction. That's a TOTAL noise reduction of 34 dB.

Consider that 6" concrete slab is worth a measly 32 dB of noise reduction...you can see what cork can do! In the building industry a noise reduction of 10 dB is considered BIG!

Acoustic drywall (which would be added to noise neighbour's ceiling) is worth 18 dB and is considered a WONDERFUL material for noise dampening. The court almost DOUBLES that!
