Master Bath Design Problems

Thanks all for having a look here, and offering up suggestions. I have provided some background on where we are so far and what our biggest challenge is.

We are about to undertake master bath reno, the current state is the picture with the arch entryway. Our master bedroom has no door to the en-suite, you can see its really open concept.

We have selected a mostly white tile with slight grey vein (12"x24" Cinca Belle Arti Dolomite, similar tile in picture attached) a free standing white bath (Maxx Villi) and wood grain vanity (image attached) with white stone top. All the plumbing fixtures (tub filler, shower and faucets) are matte black.

Our big design challenge left is what to do with the doorway. We need to get rid of the roman pillar and I think also the archway over the door, but not sure what to do with this opening. Would it look better to try to keep a pillar and use more modern style, maybe square, or remove it altogether. I think we should square off the archway, not sure if she open right to the ceiling, or keep a "doorway" type feel.

Happy to hear input on both existing material selection and more specifically ideas on this entry way?

I assume you're removing the tile around your fireplace and repainting?

#1 I think the new colors are cool (except the wood vanity) and the old are warm - along with your bedroom floor. That can be challenging to get right. Not saying it can't be done, but I'd want a professional opinion.

#2 Most built-in baths can't be replaced with drop ins unless there's a lot of room, so make sure you have enough of it. For the tub you're getting you should have 89" between the fireplace and shower. Also make sure the heat from the fireplace won't damage your new tub. There may be required clearances there.

#3 regarding your pillar. If the rest of your bedroom doesn't have anything like this, I would ditch it. Regarding round opening - again, kind of depends on how the rest of your bedroom is designed, but if this is the only arch in your room, then I would omit it. Personally I like doors to baths, not just openings, so I would at a minimum leave the opening. Maybe try replacing the fireplace with a 2 sided model (or even 1-sided) instead and actually framing in a door - but that's personal preference.

The pillar, opening, fireplace scream 80's. I would get rid of it all and install a door that is proportional to the wall size. Suggestions below.

Unless you really love the open concept and plan to be there for a while, I’d take the opportunity to rebuild the entry to the bath with a proper door. I think the open concept has more narrow appeal and can be a functional problem for couples on differing schedules.
