Range or Cooktop for kitchen

Trying to decide between having my over in the wall, or doing a range. Thoughts? It will be for a large kitchen!

Is this for gas or electric? I prefer double wall ovens, and a rangetop (not a cooktop). But only if the rangetop can be 36" wide. Not larger, not smaller.

We would have gone with range top and wall ovens if starting from scratch. But we already had a 30" Bluestar RNB range, so we kept that. And we then added a 24" Miele CSO and speed oven as two additional wall ovens.

This unexpectedly netted us three ovens, all with different complementary features. While not quite planned this way, it turns out to be extremely useful. We regularly have all three ovens in use at the same time when cooking more complicated meals.

It really is a matter of preference. I prefer double wall ovens with rangetop. In our condo we had the double wall ovens with a cooktop. We sold the condo and moved to an apt. while the house was being built and had a range. We hated the range.

We made sure that our house had the double wall ovens and rangetop.

Have had both. I much prefer the ergonomics of wall ovens, plus a rangetop. And, rangetops are much easier to keep clean, than cooktops. Cooktop knobs are on the same plane as the burners. Splatters collect on, and around the knobs. Rangetops, on the other hand, have knobs on the front, and below the burners, keeping them away from splatters. Here’s ours:

Pots and pans drawers are under the rangetop.

@darbuka, I really like your configuration. The only thing I'd change is to move the wall ovens a little higher. But then, everybody in our family is pretty tall.

We have two small 24" wall ovens, and they are stacked so that the bottom edge lines up with the counter top. I don't think that would work with the taller full size oven that you have. But I still think it would benefit from coming up some 6" to 8".

Mine is a large kitchen, and I went with a range. Basically, because I may crisp up or brown meat or vegies and then want to put them immediately in the oven to cook through.

It will all depend on how you like to cook. Also that a cooktop plus ovens will cost more than a range, which was a slight but not insignificant consideration here.

A 36" Miele induction cooktop can pair with a plumbed Miele Combi Steam wall oven. No real need for a second oven. Maybe a micro.

Wall ovens are preferable to stoves for a variety of reasons. The reason most people don't have wall ovens is because they take up more space. Depending on the price range of your home, a wall oven would be expected.

As others have pointed, wall ovens are much more ergonomically friendly than an oven that is low to the ground as it is in a stove. When I recently remodeled, I opted for a side opening Bosch oven which is even more functional since it enables me to stand directly in front of the oven to load, unload or even just baste.

Not mentioned is that an oven can be hotter to stand in front of if you are cooking on the stove while something is in the oven.

Beyond needing somewhat more space, a wall oven will be more money than just a stove since on an apples to apples basis (e.g. of comparable quality) a cooktop PLUS one or two wall ovens is more than a stove. Also you need specific cabinetry to house the wall ovens.

When I remodeled, I also needed a upgrade the electrical panel because I didn't have enough high watt circuits for all of my new appliances. Per my jurisdiction, each major appliance had to be on its own circuit so a stove would only require one whereas my oven, cooktop and microwave drawer each required a separate one.

Thanks - darbuka. I meant range top in my response to the OP.

@M (can’t get your name to hypertext 🤷🏻‍♀️)...I thought the height of the lower oven might bother me, but fortunately, it doesn’t. We could’ve raised the pair, but we keep trays, extra oven racks, cookie trays, cooling racks, grille pans, etc., above the top oven. Any higher, and we wouldn’t be able to comfortably reach them.

@dan1888, you might not need a second oven, but many people do. Our stack has a Miele CSO on top, and a Miele reg/convection below. We also have a large microwave on a shelf, to the right of the fridge...you can see it in the third pic of my original post. All three appliances get regular use.

We have toe kick drawers for the cookie sheets. But if we didn't have those, then your storage solution would be great. In fact, we had planned something very similar before another post on Houzz taught me about toe kick drawers
