Kitchen Flooring

Hello everyone! Love this site! We redid our kitchen had our cabinets painted white and we pulled the tiles they were old and cracked. Our tile guy recommended this tile but we didn’t realize that it was a high gloss tile and I’m nutty over every smudge shows no matter how much I clean it, feels slippery-also I hate the transition from the foyer to the kitchen I don’t think it matches at all. It’s about a week old and I’m ready to rip it out NOW. I’m considering going hardwood like two other adjoining rooms instead of trying to get another tile that matches well? Nervous about hardwood in the kitchen but I think it seems like a good idea at this point!! Just a note we don't have any pets as I’m allergic to everything. the kids are not toddlers anymore if helps to make a decision whether or not to put hardwood as this is getting very expensive we hire contractors to do it all! Thanks!

oh that is a shame. really sorry . it's a great tile in some regards.. these things happen. it's hard to see how that could work. Area rugs and runners ? I don't think so..... .

Match the hardwood and BTW DWs use a ton less water than hand washing and at this time a great germ killer too.

Match the hardwood! For heavens sake, why chop up the area? And start using that dishwasher BEFORE an install of hardwood. Too infrequent a use can cause the seal to dry out. Test it NOW and multiple runs of a dishwasher in a single day is just fine, not a mortal sin in ant\y way. Google it.......: ) It's far more sanitary and very energy efficient.

Why are people commenting on your dishwasher?? Any way, remove all that tile and install real hardwood floors. I’ve had hardwood floors in my kitchens since 1987. That’s 4 different kitchens, it’s never been a problem with anything. Tile is hard to stand on and yours belongs in an high end master bath and even then would be too slippery

@Kathy Furt - My initial post had read that I don't use the dishwasher so maybe decreased water issues on the wood floor if there is a leak but I did not want it to become a discussion handwashing vs dishwashing LOL!! Thanks for your advice, I am forcing myself to love this floor but I just can't :( Has your floor held up well? Thanks!

Our hardwood floor has been in our kitchen for 35 years. We still love it. The kids were 2 and 3 when we moved in. We had pets for 31 years.

Janet! Yes!! They look great. I raised 2 girls with hardwoods everywhere, you get a varathane finish 3 coats it’s not a problem. Have had them in 4 different houses over 34 years.

I'm so sorry - that tile is very pretty but belongs in an upscale bath. Do the hardwood. I've had hardwood floors in my kitchen for 28 years and I'm just now refinishing them because I am renovating. I've raised 2 kids (3 if you count DH), and 3 dogs. We haven't had any issues.

Oh yeah and dogs!! So first 2 pics installed in 1998 and refinished in 2018 when we sold the house. Current house has originals installed in 1983 in kitchen and new ones we installed in 2018. There’s nothing like the beauty of a real hardwood floor. Even engineered would be so much better than marble tile!

Oh the pic with Rosie the cockapoo, those were original to the house built in 1962, we just refinished them

@Kathy Furt Wow you and the dogs and FLOOR look amazing LOL! Thank you for sharing, I have two wood installers coming tomorrow for an estimate!!! I am convinced haha!

We loved the hardwood floors in the kitchen of our previous home. They looked great, were warm and soft on the feet, and didn't show dirt! Cleaning them was easy: daily sweep when needed, and once a week I vacuumed and damp mopped with a tiny drop of soap.

    I vote hardwood!

Sorry about your tile but yes ,yes, I love hardwoods especially with white cabinets!
I was nervous about hardwood in the kitchen because of water damage but my flooring lady said "go for it". She'd always had hardwood in her kitchen and never had a problem. Best of luck.

Another vote for hardwood. We had it with kids, dogs and even pool, including dripping wet kids. No regrets.

We had a pool too!! I forgot that !!

Well Janet that is my daughter on her first day of her new job after college graduation! I don’t look nearly as good as she does, now 28! It’s one of the few pics I saved on my phone but it shows the kitchen before we painted the cabinets and refinished the floors!! 😂😂😂. Now these are what we’ve installed in our “new” old house. So original in kitchen that was built in 1984, and what we have replaced so far. Nothing I hate more than seeing 3 different floorings when. You open the front door

    The most important to consider?

What do you see in very high end custom build for flooring, and how many different floors do you see?

Answers: :Hardwood/ and area rugs, One flooring first floor to include the powder room and often mud space as well. Laundry may be tile

No more than two varieties flooring second floor. Hardwood, and tile in baths. Sometimes? Even a master bath has a hardwood.

I may be the outlier here, but I actually like tile! Of course, if you don't then replace with hardwood. We have had hardwood in kitchen for 10 years and no issues so far.

Out of curiosity, can you share what tile is it - model/color? And what do you not like about it? I was actually thinking of replacing my hardwood with similar tile, so will be helpful to know. You mentioned smudges, slippery feel and transitions...anything else? And would your decision be any different if you had tile in the other areas as well? FWIW, I have seen similar tile in $2MM+ homes recently with contemporary designs.

@Sarge Smudges, Slippery feet and Transition failure not enough HA! I don't like the fact that there is 3 different type of flooring so close together. The smudges after 10 minutes of steam mopping is frustrating at the least. At times we come in from the pool into the kitchen and I can't even imagine how slippery it can get it, we have 4 kids including the buddies, we live in NY or should I say USA- Can anyone say LAWSUIT if they fall in my kitchen? When I walk in my Kitchen there is no traction I feel like I am in a mall... Would I feel different if there was tile in other areas? That is hard to say because I don't have 24x24 high gloss polished tile in other rooms..

Good luck with your decision, I almost crave my old cracked 12x12 nasty grouted tiles at this point :(

@sarge I couldn’t attach the picture on the computer because I have a picture on my phone not sure if you were tagged probably but here’s a picture of the tile

Thanks Janet. This certainly will factor in my decision, whenever I get to it!
