Java gel on stair handrails

We recently had our red oak floors refinished. We plan on applying General Finishes gel ourselves. Java seems the most popular but what do you think with our med. brown floors? Should we stain the two bottom posts or paint them white like the spindles?

Have you stripped all the old varnish off? If so don't use gel stain, use the same stain used on the floors. Regarding the newel post that is personal taste. I didn't want to strip mine so it was easier to paint it, I did strip the handrails. IMHO i would paint the bottom riser white to be consistent with the others...

Love the staircase and the floors! I would paint the posts white to match the spindles.

Do you think Java is too dark against my floors? We tested some boards with Walnut. I know we could do a combo of both but would rather stick with one.

And yes, handrails are stripped and sanded to bare wood
